Collecting Morgan Philly's a good idea?

So I bought my first slabbed coin two weeks ago. It was an 1887 Morgan P. It's in a PCGS Slab graded MS 64. I paid $75.00 for it. That matched up with prices on PCGS and NGC websites. Even EBay was right there at that price. So I was pleased with what I got, so much so that I was thinking of going for all P Morgan's. Is that a good idea for someone new to collecting and numismatics?

    I'm biased, but, I think it's a great idea...
My 1st suggestion, would be, to go out and buy a few books on the subject, Bowers new book just came out, I also recommend buying a silver dollar encyclopedia, Wayne Miller and John Highfill both wrote their own version on this. It's a great coin to learn how to grade, and will help you grade other series down the road. I would also suggest throwing some early S mint, and O mint coins into your collection as well, and maybe a 1921, to give you an idea of the characteristics of each..

You won't find me arguing against collecting Morgans, no matter how you do it. The various reverses on the 1878 Phillys are a real trip to collect.

I just figured Philly's were in my price range. The LCS had an MS 66 that had me drooling. The tail feathers on the reverse just jumped out at you. That was $125.00 still in my price range.

Fair warning! You will want a Carson City at some point no matter how well disciplined you are.:woot:

$125 for any Morgan in ms66 graded by PCGS or NGC is an absolute steal...hurry up and snatch that baby up and post some pics!

I think you might be right. At some point the CC's will be calling me with the a Siren's song.

Philly, San Francisco, and New Orleans all have dates that are common and dates that are spendy. You can choose only Philly's if you want, but, yeah, I like 'em all...and CC's have great appeal...

And generally, the early S F years are some of the best looking Morgans out there...

They're a good idea to collect, but not so hot to sell for the same reason....accessibility. PCGS alone has almost 62,000 of them in MS64 alone. So, easily acquired, but not much as an investment coin.

With most Philly Morgans you can afford to be picky. I'd be more than a bit worried about an MS66 at $125, though - that's little more than half of retail.

You may be right, I could have confused it with an MS 65.

The 1894 will be very expensive. Maybe do one from every year regardless of mint?

I've done a date set of Morgans plus multiple mint marks for some years. That's very doable.

If you want them all slabbed are there binders you can keep them in?

I've never seen a binder for slabbed coins. Maybe someone else has. Slab boxes work well though all your coins aren't as visible as in an album.

I've seen albums with pages for slabs before. Problem is once you get them filled they tend to be so heavy they tend to break.
