Good evening everyone! Just wanted to share my pickups from earlier today. Decent stuff with good prices. I got to fill another hole in my Morgan albums so that's a plus, and it was a CC to boost! Granted, it could have been a higher quality coin, but I'll swap it out sometime in the future when I come across another raw specimen. I'm kind of wondering about the peace dollar though. To the naked eye, it's nearly immaculate except for some marks on the reverse but when I went to take a picture I had noticed what looks like a thumb print right on the face! But for $50, I'm happy with it regardless of any marks. What do you think of my new additions?
I don't think it's due to a print or prints. It appears to look more like bag marks, wear, and circulation issues. Place some ink or charcoal on the end of your finger press it on to a piece of paper, you will notice the difference. Still, a very nice-looking coin. I like them all!
I'll see if I can get some more pictures tonight or tomorrow to show what I'm talking about with the peace. The daylight in the background seemed to show it more, so most likely tomorrow. All of that aside, I still think that peace was a great deal, especially considering the other coins I have from them.
I bought a handful of other culls and he just decided to lump them all in at $10/each. I do frequent this shop as often as I can afford and I'm getting to be a regular first-name basis type of customer. He's incredibly friendly and informative, and has helped me learn a decent amount about lots of different coins I never ever knew existed. And he is very upfront about selling cleaned or damaged coins and prices them accordingly.
Wow. If only I could get close to that shop. Here in Indiana, I have a lot of good coin places to go to, but I've never heard of those culls for so cheap.
He started selling on eBay recently, so I can ask him for his store name next time I'm there if you like.
You have to spend some time in the shop and get to know the shopkeeper. Become friends with them... That's when you get the really good deals.
I actually have a cousin who works in one of the coin shops about 35 miles south of me. I've bought three and sixpences off him at melt value, plus many other coins. As for up north, I have gotten a deal on a 1908 Indian cent, as the original price was $85, but the guy working there decided I could get it for $76. I took some barter items up there and walked out with it, putting about $44 into it. It was graded by ICG at MS-64 brown and had some attractive blue toning (nothing dramatic, though). Honestly at the shop up north, they sell junk silver for less than melt, and about $1.13 on war nickels. There was one time I got them for $1, which makes my second lowest price. That's something I've sold 24 of in the past 6 weeks.
Here's a better look at what I believe is a fingerprint. The sunlight definitely made it easier to capture.
