Took a chance on this, knowing very little about errors. It was 1.37$ with free shipping. My question is: is this a real mint clipped planchet, or can this be easily duplicated and sold as "geniune"?
Yes, the clip itself can be duplicated with a pair of nippers. What can't be duplicated is the "Blakesley Effect" you most often find on the edge opposite the clip. As a rule, the details on the opposite edge are somewhat flat. The problem is that the Blakesley Effect doesn't always show itself, and this appears to be the case with your coin. When that occurs, we find ourselves in a "best guess" scenario. Yours does appear to be genuine, but it is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. In this case, $1.37. Chris
Thanks. I just wanted a clipped planchet example for my 8 year old. I'm now going to read about the Blakesley effect.
Question kind sir: so opposite the clip on the obverse, my pic shows a "darkened area " from slightly above left of Lincoln s shoulder running up through the I and b of liberty. This appears as a shadow on my pic, but the surface of the field seems to change planes. I'm sorry if this is a bad explanation, I'm doing my best. Is this because of this blakesley effect?
The dark area you see is probably just discoloration from circulation. The Blakesley Effect would more likely be seen on the rim. Have you googled Blakesley Effect and looked at some of the images? Chris
