A New GTG

Picked this one up today at probably wholesale dealer value in auction. (basing this off NGC Coin Guide Retail pricing). What are your opinions? Seller's photos. Also I believe this to be a 1900 O VAM 15-A Top 100. I see die cracks, wreath clash, N clash, Liberty's neck double clash and from what I can tell doubled stars to the right of the date.

I'll post the grade tomorrow, PCSG.

What I think is the investment side of your collecting Plan might not work out.

 

You seem chock full of opinions with very few answers.

I will be more straightforward.
My opinion is that any hobbyist/collector that collects for investment reasons will be disappointed.

I realize that you meant to type PCGS, not PCSG.

There was a PCSG private encapsulator at one time, though. Many hobbyist investors were very disappointed.

Basing pricing considerations via NGC retail pricing guide is at best a "...we're going to make Billions, Jerry...Billions I tell ya.." plan.

Assuming a coins is "probably" a wholesale dealer value is adding to the attempt to be a numismatic investor. The piece posted will not help.

You did ask for opinions. I understand I am not helpful. It happens.

 

The hue in your pic's is not the best example of what the coin represents. If you are happy with the purchase that's all that counts. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Thanks for sharing.

 

It's all I have available, seller's photos. And yes, I thought hard about passing on it but it is slabbed by PCGS. (I may be dyslexic. ) So odds are it isn't cleaned or have problems. I think it may be undergraded, but that kind of ruins the reveal.

I hear ya. But investing is speculative, whether it's collectibles, the stock market, or tulips. I never said this was anything but a hedge. Just like waterfront property, they aren't making these anymore. And just like my waterfront property, I'm going to have some fun along the way. Life is too short to sweat the small things.

 

Thanks. I try to collect the MS grades, even if the dates are common. I enjoy looking at them. I just can't bring myself to spend a fortune on the 1893-95 scarcities because there is no eye candy appeal in the condition I reasonably can afford. I've got a lot of stackable, ugly piggies, more than I know what to do with. And I am drawn to mint die varieties, it makes the process a lot more interesting.

 

If it really looks like that I like it. And it’s a technical 66 if there ever was one.

EDIT: Should be easy to identify the VAM off the crack under the date, as we don’t see them much there.

 

I'm guessing it went as a MS-65, but possibly a bit more.

Wow. Has anyone here ever cracked out a coin to be resubmitted? I REALLY respect your opinion. Tomorrow afternoon, I'll reveal. The only thing I can guess is that is a weak strike gets huge penalty strokes.

 

Ya have to show the brilliant shots that show contact. The coin looks real lusterous. Don't go off of my or any one elses opinion here .
Find what is acceptable for a gem grade and deduct, or add the eye appeal.
Even the dark photos show low contact , but very nice looking surfaces.

 

I was hoping you'd help out with attribution more than grade. This one is a PIA. No matter in the long run, I'll get Messy's company to sort it out if I don't crack it out. This one is a complete enigma on two fronts!

 

It shouldn't be? There is a very distinct crack at the date Looks like there might be an ST clash also. There used to be Some real good Vammmer's that gave their knowledge around here, a new Morgan or 5 a night.

 

Does it look like a 15 A to you? I am bidding on another coin, different year and now I am tired and confused. Some of these varieties have such subtle differences it drives me nuts. Sometimes it's just a different stage of a die death. What say ye?
