I've got about 50 coins I am going to submit. Yes, I know about the special. My question is this: If you want your individual coin to be attributed and you do not know what VAM it is and want to be sure, is it just an additional fee of $14 per coin? It seems dumb to guess and get it wrong and have it just come back with a straight grade and nothing else. ??? I guess I could call them and ask, but like everything else, I don't trust the front line phone answerers.
I got numerous Jefferson varieties graded a few years ago. I was happy with the Jefferson nickels submitted. They came back in my favor. All I had to do was write what it was at no extra cost. I had a couple surprises with extra info attributions without asking for it. On a Buffalo nickel batch I sent they killed me on ridiculous low grades or details etc. My advice would be to not pay for any restoration services. I paid and they did nothing in a submission of 18 coins where they could have improved a few at least. Now I don't remember any specifics on that submission except disappointment. I feel that they just took the money and maybe didn't even ever noticed I paid for it and I checked it on the submission form. It was no small change and I got nothing for it. I also disagreed with the grades I got. I am through with ANACS. Yes they can be cheaper by far than NGC and PCGS but I feel the graders are less skilled.
All TPG's guesses are as good as mine. I am the best grader I know, by far, and I pay myself with pride not profit.
And that is probably true and admirable. However, collecting for me isn't just a hobby, it's an investment. I don't mind investing in grading for the future potential sales increment. A lot of sleepers get sold (as well as dogs) that are ungraded. TPG grading is just a hedge on future value. But no matter, I was more interested in what they charge for attribution if you don't know the exact VAMinology. That was my question.
In my experience submitting to PCGS (and it could be different for ANACS) is that I simply checked the box for variety attribution; the TPG took care of the rest in terms of identifying the correct information. Having said that, I know PCGS will only attribute certain VAMs (Top 100, Hot 50, etc) and I don't know if ANACS is the same.
I think it's the same for NGC, you simply check the box and pay the extra money on to of the grading fee. I did that with an error coin and a seated liberty quarter variety. Now, should they decide it isn't a variety, they still keep the money of course.
I have some at ANACS currently, that were opened on 1/4 and expected ship date is 3/12. Two are varieties and I have identified them on the form. But I believe they will verify and that's what the additional 12 bucks is for. So just put what you think it is. I paid for the imaging for a couple coins too, curious to see how bad those are going to look.
ANACS will fully attribute even the lesser known varieties. My specific question is if I guess the wrong attribution (if I declare one) and it is another, then what? Do they put the correct VAM listing or just take the money and return it with a grade but no attribution? Or just pay the research fee and let them sort it out? I suppose I will call them to clarify.
Don't use it. Never have. No cell phone. Old Ma Bell 26 Pr. Princess Avacado wall mount. No cable TV. 40' multi-directional signal tower. Quite easy to reach ANACS.
Does this kind person loan you their computer too @charley. Out with the old in with the new, good luck.
I will help sharpen the detective investigation. There are choices other than a "loan". What is the Holmesian detective guideline...don't ask a question you don't know the answer or already considered are possible answers....or something like that?
More power to you I guess. I've never had cable TV and my cell provider is Google Fi, but I've spent the better part of my life switching back and forth between ATT, Comcast, and WOW! for internet and I don't recommend any of them, but I gotta have internet. Alright, sorry for derailing the conversation, OP. Hope the ANACS phone answerer is human and helpful!
