You can see from the visible part of the insert that it is not a rattler but a more modern generation of PCGS holder. I do think it could have been as low as 63 in that era though.
I'm not sure I fully understood the question but if the implication is would one have a talk with a coin dealer about a coin being overgraded (presumably to purchase it a lower price), I would say no. If it went to auction and all the bidders felt it was overgraded, you might see a lower price but in general the price is dictated by the grade (even if the grade is "wrong"). Now negotiating in general is perfectly fine, but I would not expect to get down to MS 63 pricing on an MS 64 (why would the dealer when he can wholesale it as an MS 64, especially for a commonly traded coin).
Well, I thought this went out last night. Allright, the dealer had these come in, I think that there were 3 all MS65 and graded at the same time, same slab all within a few numbers of each other. This was the best of the three. We started talking, I passed him the coin said don't you think that there is way too much contact on this coin to be considered a 65? He started off on a few coins that he sent in and wasn't very happy with how they came back. He showed me the coins and they were ultra conservative with them. Peace Dollars. Anyways I ended up paying just under 64+ CPG. And she came home with me. I will be honest there are plenty of coins that I like, just liberally graded, and I don't like the price point and have to pass. Every once in a while, you find dealers that are willing to work with you, and that's what happened here. I would say that most folks here have the same sentiments about this coin, and that there is just no way that it should be in a gem slab. Some of you went a little conservative, I like that, it should be the way every buyer approaches a purchase New PCGS MS65 It does have some real nice luster
@OCOPR48 If someone found this coin at 63, they would wonder what is wrong with it. Good call on the grade.
It's a luster bomb. I think the 65 is justified. I think a technical 64 upper end that eye appeal jumped a grade
Interesting look @Mainebill , I do ponder what the finalizers were thinking at the time, and that's with every coin I buy.
I'd have probably called it a 64+ or a 64 green cac. To me it's an in-between coin. A couple marks heavy for a technical 65. Yet luster eye appeal way beyond an average 64
I agree and thats why it would look much better in a 64 slab. Edit :I might have paid more for the coin if it was IMO correctly graded.
