How do you guys feel about slab issues?

I got something new in the mail. Would consider fairly high end for mine and most collections. Not the newest NGC slab but it is an edge view. It arrived with patches of some type of adhesive on the slab front and back. The pic of the coin matches what was on NGC's photo log on their website. The coin's great but I hate when the slab has defects, especially when it somewhat impairs the viewing of the coin. It's such a pain to send in for a re-holder. What do people do to their slabs!? How do you feel when you get something and the slab has some problem?

I tried a little Goo Gone on it and thought it would work fine but the adhesive material has permanently damaged the plastic surface. The affected areas now feel smooth and not sticky, but you can still see the blemishes, like a streak right down the middle through the obverse side. It's almost like a quarter inch strip of tape was right down the middle and left for a long time. I said something to the seller about it.

If it's not too severe you might want to try Meguiars plastx.

 

There is something on the market for polishing defects out of vehicle headlight plastic. Not sure what it's called though. Someone here in another thread mentioned that it worked.

 

Try a rub with some rubbing alcohol on a soft rag. It might get the last of the gunk off, and it won't hurt the slab. It works for me.

 

Good tip but just tried alcohol and that didn't help it. It's like a haze that's imbedded in the plastic now and casts a shadow on the white rubber inside the slab.

 

That would bother me and I'd try alcohol, CLR, or whatever I could to get rid of it. I'm curious what the seller says.

 

It sounds like you'll have to live with it or work something out with the seller. Or, you could reholder but I'd imagine it would cost 40-50 after all fees (reholder, mailing, etc)

 

NGC's fees for reholder (assuming it's a <$10k coin) would be $10 plus whatever the share of shipping would be. Piggyback it with a local dealer or something?

 

Some olive oil can help get rid of that haze...it's worked for me before.
