Haha, I've followed the Tetradrachm threads so I know you're on the lookout too! I just love them... I think it's their "chunkyness" and different style that I like. Plus, EGYPT!!! How cool is that? I've really been wanting some earlier (Commodus, A Pius, Hadrian) Tetradrachms but there are just so many later and more cost friendly ones I don't have yet! I'll get there soon enough! Anyway, I snapped a couple quick photos of three of my more recent favorites. I'll add them here but future coins to threads. Claudius II Billon tetradrachm, Dattari 5413; Milne 4291; Geissen 3047; Curtis 1687; BMC Alexandria p. 303, 2336, aEF, Alexandria, Aug - Sep 270 A.D.; obverse AYT K KΛAY∆IOC CEB, laureate, draped and cuirassedbust right from behind; reverse L - Γ (year 3) across field, eagle right, wreath in beak, palm frond behind. Aurelian EGYPT, Alexandria. 270-275 AD. Potin Tetradrachm. Dated year 5 (273/4 AD). Köln 3078; Dattari 5495; Milne 4397. Probus EGYPT, Alexandria. Year 2 (276/277 AD). Potin Tetradrachm (8.47 gm). To be honest, those images are about a hundred times better than I was expecting. The coins are very choice examples of their types. As for age demographics, I am 19.
Ha, thanks for the encouragement everyone! See the phone camera can get some ok images. I really want to photograph them like they deserve but these work for a quick post. Many of you have such excellent images, I'm not there yet but someday soon I'll dive in. I just wish I'd started earlier as I'd take me months to get through them all! ...thinking about this... It's a good "problem" to have, the coins I have could keep me busy and happy for years but that's not going to stop me adding to the collection!
Beautiful coins man. I'm glad you joined this forum. It's going to be so much fun seeing your collection. Based on those pictures you've shared, it looks very promising.
Ha, I wish I was 19 still! Great times! I'm 37 but my wife wonders as I still live, eat and sleep like I'm still entering my 20s (I run on pizza). I do have a lot of coins but to be honest, I was buying a ton of rough and common coins early on while I learned a bit. Since I've tried to concentrate on quality but it's tough as a "new coin in the mail day" is my favorite day!
I fixed my post. Got you and another poster mixed. Nothing wrong with rougher coins. They all need a little love too. I have rougher coins: And I have "quality coins": I love them all the same. All ancient coins have redeeming qualities, no matter how rough or worn some might be. They all need a good home. Just about the only thing my coins have in common is that they are all silver or high silver content Billon, buy that's only because I'm such a silver bug. Outside of that I'll collect most ancient and medieval types I can find from all sorts of cultures all over the world, and my coins vary from XF examples that look as minty as the day they were made all the way to humble F condition coins that saw a lot of action in antiquity/medieval times.
Thanks Doug! I just have an adjustable lamp from IKEA that sits next to my couch. I just put it at a bit of an angle and snapped a few with my iPhone. Not bad huh?! If I removed the background they may be passable! Sallent, that Trajan (especially the obverse) is beautiful!
Thanks. I love Trajan. That denarius looks even better in person...it has a lot of luster. However, my favorite Trajan is this rougher looking tetradrachm. It might not be as pristine or pretty, but like I said, every coin has its own set of redeeming qualities that make you fall in love with them, and sometimes a favorite one may not necessarily be the more "high end" or pristine one, but rather a more humble one. This one may not be as shiny, but it sure is big and beefy. And Melqart on the reverse reminds me of the hulk.
I'm a bit disappointed ! I was expecting terrible pics of ugly coins and what do we see ? Rather good images (background isn't an issue in itself) of far better than average coins. Very good job you did Q
If it makes you feel any better, I only have a few hundred Ancient Chinese coins, but only four ancient Greeks. BTW, @Orange Julius , I love your avatar.
