Mintage was 48,866,025 not an uncommon coin. PCGS puts the value at a few 2-5 dollars in that condition. Cool find! The oldest coin I've found with my metal detector so far was a 1973 quarter. My 11 year old asked me how much it was worth...I told him....25 cents!!!!
Take it from a 40-year numismatist AND detecting veteran (I started both in 1976): you ain't gonna get rich off that 1889 cent, but its value as a great detecting find outweighs its mainstream numismatic ($) value to collectors (who are understandably picky about "environmental damage" on dug copper.) Go back to that site! There could be Seated and Barber dimes there! And maybe, just MAYBE ... something REALLY sweet! Do I really need to whisper the words "gold coin" in your ear? I bet not. Bet you already whispered it to yourself. Now, don't hold your breath- a gold coin still hasn't happened to me yet in 40 years, but a friend of mine dug two- a 1781 Spanish escudo and a 1907 $10 Liberty- on the same site! Saw 'em with my own eyes, and I know for a fact he dug 'em. It happens on those older sites. I once bought an 1899 $20 gold piece that was dug just north of here. Congrats on a cool find, never mind the money value. Now... go get 'em! Keep it beepin'!
