Definite impact damage, along with heavy wear from friction. That poor thing. See how the metal is dented inward from the edge, and pushed up? That can't happen during striking. If it were a "clipped" coin, where a notch was taken out of the planchet before it was struck, you wouldn't see the metal pushed up like that.
Looks like it may have been exposed to heat or a chemical. Near the date, the clad layers seem to be receding.
I guess what threw me off, is the fact that the outer edge on the coin wasnt to badly damaged. So I couldn't figure out what or how the damage was caused. Thank for your help.
