Found these side by side the other day. At first, I was gonna pass on the darker one because they were the same date. But then I saw something and decided to buy it too.
What did I see that made me buy the second one?
And what are the grades. They are both graded by the same TPG.
If you only want to guess the grades you can vote in the poll above.

There are a multitude of answers that relate to my collecting habits. The answers are clearly seen in the photos.

The eagle has an ingrown toenail. What did I win? Seriously, the reverse is slightly out of collar.

@eddiespin, as my dad used to say, spontaneous blind eye; "cannot turn away, turn it down, got to have it."

I’ll remember it. I got that, myself, I never knew what it was called. :)

That’s like the one: “It was in the Spring, and I was young, and love was in the air, and I didn’t know what I was doing.” :)

Coin 1: MS 65 ...looks mark-free and lustrous
Coin 2: AU 58 ....it might be the toning, but I believe I see wear

....as far as what made you go for Coin 2, maybe something with the mintmark? (just a guess as I'm not sure)

Well, everyone missed this one. The pic up is in the weak letters RTY, OF AMERICA, and DOLLAR.
Since my internet was down the past day. I will post the grades mid day today.

The first is attributed and graded MS64. The doubling in this die stage is hard to see even in hand. The S/S is easier to see. All in all the varieties are minor. This one is in between a C and D die stage.

After noticing the die cracks on the first coin.
Mainly the crack from the ES thru IBUS to the right wing,
    upload_2024-2-13_10-54-35.jpeg
I picked up the second one and it was much heavier and larger. The Crack now goes thru the rim and extends from the E down to the eagles beak and across the head. There is also a new crack from the left wing and thru the TAT and to the rim.

The second 40S is a MS63. Unattributed but the same die pairing and gen slab as the first. This one is a die stage F.
