@Orange Julius , welcome. Take pictures...it doesn't have to be anything expert. And three years of buying coins and not sharing? That's crazy.

And most important of all, congrats on being a father-to-be. As a father I can tell you that there is nothing more beautiful than having your child give you a hug and kiss and say "I love you daddy." Nothing can top that...not any amount of money, career, coins, or anything else you can think of. You'll see when you experience it for yourself.

@Orange Julius welcome to the unlurking side. I too find myself on the eclectic edge of numismatics. If it catches my eye I try and buy it. This is very unusual actually as I am always focused in every aspect of live except this one. I am trying to focus more but can,t seem to part with some of the thousands of coins I have already purchased. I tell my self how many raw 1922d cents, or MS66 common Buffalo nickels do you need. I have rolls and boxes of wheat cents and 1000 pieces of circulated silver. Ancients and CWT's have really got me to try and focus as there is so many different pieces you can buy without breaking the bank and there are stories to go with them. Again Welcome from one eclectic to another.

Looking forward to seeing your first coin!

Coin photography can be as simple as a $20 extender ring for a camera and tripod you already have.

Or it can be as simple as using sellers pictures. That's what I do. Eventually I'll invest in the equipment to take the pictures myself, and learn to do it. But right now getting coins is my priority.

Uhm, 31 years old here. I think we are fairly diverse crowd. The last time we took a poll on the age of members here, it was fairly evenly divided. Half of the people here were under the age of 50, and half were above the age of 50

I can't find the poll, but if I recall correctly there were numerous members/posters in your age group.

    Welcome @Orange Julius !

I somewhat lurked here myself for a year or so. I was also was not into coin photography either(honestly, I'm still not) , but I've improved a bit. You can make up for crappy photography quite a bit with post-processing, something like this may be useful....

    I use gimp.

here's some of my older coin pics...

here's a recent pic with exactly the same camera...

I did just plop the coin on my old table and take a pic of each side, maybe two pics. Now, take MANY pics of each side of the coin, pick the best ones for focus, put them together and edit with gimp.

Welcome/welcome back. My photo skills are also lacking but if you keep your sense of humor and ignore those comments on bad photos, go ahead and give it a shot with a few that are better. Doug is right about scanners and photos, I use mine for photos but I do not use the complete functionality of the program and keep it on the easier part of the program. One of these days though I will learn how to use the more complicated part of it. It's good for some coins as is but will not cut the glare on B.U. coins. I only have a few ancients but they are the really tiny ones and all need to be cleaned as they were hoard coins and sold to me as dug.

Welcome to the club, I am kind of a "newbie" too, but this forum has great members, wonderfull posts/photos:):):):):):):):):):)
600 Ancient coins is pretty good in my book....I am no where near that total!
But then I collect all periods in history, ancients are still numero uno!

    Orange Julius,
Welcome and don't be shy about posting what you may think are "ugly" coins. Some of those worn, pitted or discolored pieces may represent a lot of fascinating historic and cultural value that will be of interest to many on this forum.

    Cheers

Welcome OJ! Nice to see you have decided to start posting. Like you, I lurked for quite a while before actively posting. I'm really glad I got involved here because this unique online community is so enjoyable I couldn't imagine coining without it!

Oh, and I'm a cat dad too. :)

In 1997 I posted a page on imaging coins with a scanner:
    http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/scan.html

I felt that scanners used with care were good for coins. Not long after that I bought my first digital camera. My scanner did almost as good work. Then scanner manufacturers made a change in their product that ruined scanners IMHO for coins. Old scanners had depth of field allowing a coin to be in focus even if its relief was high and not all of the coin touched the glass. The new style did not. For a few years you could buy either style. The good ones were larger and thicker while the new style was thing and suited for inclusion in an all in one package with printer and fax. Cameras have gotten better, scanners, worse. The image below is from my old scanner c.1997 which still ran well when I no longer could get a driver for it and the then current Windows flavor. I still have a Canon scanner that works with mu Vista computer but Vista is an orphan now, too, so it won't be long until I am out of the business. Sad.

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

I can sometimes squeeze some ok photos out of my iPhone! I actually just bought a fancy camera to take pictures of the baby... I suppose as long as the memory card isn't COMPLETELY full of coin photos...

Anyway, I'll post a few coins here later tonight to go along with my intro!

Yay, we want pictures! iPhone pics can be more than good enough for general purposes if you make some type of stand for the phone.

Hmm, more competition for these? Maybe I should rescind the welcome :p :D
