Hi all, I've been reading these boards as a guest and uncommenting member for several years. So... Hi! About my user name: After many (several many) beers one night, I thought the name I'd chosen was slightly funny. Later I decided it was terrible and tried to re-register under a different username and was promptly banned according to the rules. Anyway... I guess I'm back and stuck with this one. I regularly post on some other boards. I really enjoy the light-hearted banter here and decided it was time to jump in. COINS! - I've been collecting ancients for only three years or so... but it's been an obsessive three years. I've learned just enough to be dangerous but not enough that I'm spending big dollars. We've all been told to find a focus but I'm just not there yet. I collect about everything. I'm new enough to the hobby that anything that catches my eye is another opportunity for learning. I've been mostly snapping up LBRs, Alexandrian Tetradrachms, and some earlier silver and bronze. I follow Doug's philosophy that a coin being interesting or loved is independent of cost or condition (a complement!). Many of my favorite coins are too ugly to post... like rare mopeds on a Harley forum... but that's the way I like it. Me: 37, soon to be first-time dad, upper-Midwest, retired crazy man (not retired like not working but retired like I've hung up my party animal days), cat dad... hmm that's about it... Coin Photos: Coin photograph is my weakness. I have 600ish coins but have made no serious attempt to photograph them.. this gives me depression. I love photography, I take tons of photos, I love coins... but all I have is bad iPhone photos of my coins. So... If you ask me to post them, that's what you'll get for now. Well, that's my intro, hi all! I feel like I know (in a coin board sense) most of you a bit due to reading your threads for the last few years... and hope to contribute a bit soon! Josh
Hello and welcome! Unfortunately, I have to take exception to one of your statements... ... seriously, there's no such thing! Do your worst ...
Welcome man! Post your coins, it makes this hobby more enjoyable when we get to share our coins with people who want to see them are are interested in similar things. On coin photography don't be afraid to try it out. It can be a fun side hobby. Check out Doug's articles on his website. Here's an LRB for you: Constantine I, AD 306-337 AE, Follis, 4.48g, 22mm; 6h; Rome, AD 312-313 Obv.: IMP CONSTANTNVS PF AVG; laureate draped bust right, seen from behind Rev.: SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI; legionary eagle between two vexilla In Ex.: R P
Welcome OJ (hmmm, maybe that handle isn't quite as cool as it once was, eh?) => 600 coins!! ... wow, I can't wait to see your coin photos (dude, they can't be as poor as my weak photo-efforts) ... I'll try not to judge
Welcome Josh, all of your 600+ coins are important to all of us on CT, no matter what condition, they have all gone through ancient to current history they all hold there own story through time, we need to see them all (but not at once)
Orange Julius is a great screen name! Welcome! There's no ugly when it comes to collecting ancient coins.
Welcome. I lurked a couple years before I posted. Learned a lot. Started posting, learned a lot more. Enjoy!
Well, it's about time that you came out of the shadows. Personally, I would like to see your coins even if the images are not what you would like. Like everyone else I welcome you to begin posting here. Some of us like to think of this forum as a family. Even though some of us may be dysfunctional, we still love each other (well, love may be a strong term, but you get what I mean).
Welcome. I do have one thing to say about coin photography. The modern online coin collecting hobby requires we do a few things we might not have done in the 'good old days'. Prime among these is photography. Participating in discussion boards including Coin Talk requires us all to have a little ability to read and write the English language even though we do have several active members for whom English is not their primary tongue. There are discussion boards online that operate in languages other than English and those of us who have no abilities in those languages will miss out on information to be found there. Coin Talk is an English language venue. All current coin discussion and coin sales websites depend on one additional language. That is photography. Just like I am able to get a small amount of value out of some non-English sources (I read enough French to read Cohen and Latin to read Roman coins), a person with limited to no photo skills will be able to participate here but only to a reduced degree. Our computers have translation engines that will input words in French and spit out words in English but the results can fall somewhere between funny and dangerously misleading. The equivalent to the computer translation of text is the imagery produced by scanners and the vast majority of telephone cameras. Really careful workers can do wonders with a scanner or a phone if and only if they apply a good deal of brainpower and practice. In the long run, full participation in Coin Talk, buying and selling online and survival in modern numismatic society will make it necessary to picking up Photography ('reading' and 'writing') as a second language. Learn how photos lie and how they show wondrous things. Enable yourself to post images that will allow us all to experience your coins and answer your questions. I suppose my capabilities in the French language would improve if I were to move to France for a couple years but I never would be mistaken for a native speaker. I really recommend you make the move to the land of Photography and start learning the language. Like French, reading is easier than writing for those of us just starting out but we will only make progress when we decide that we really must.
Yes, I actually did. And Thank You! Started on CT in mid-2013 and started posting mid-2015 Been collecting as a rank amateur for years. Research was really online and books, then got on here... sat back, watched, and learned a couple years before I plunged. That has always been my style. It's that exec thing in me... Let others do their job well, sit back and learn...
Nice Constantine coin, but the bust is actually only cuirassed. I have attached a "seen from behind" example.
