My first (and probably only) $20 St Gaudens. Apmex was running a special on a “random” PCGS MS63. $2155 to my front door. It’s shockingly impressive to me.
Nice. I was buying flip holders and some stuff out of the $1 nickel jar (after inquiring opinions about a few of my coins) with my local coin dealer right before Christmas.......and a lady was picking up a couple of St Gaudens for her husband as a present in front of me at the checkout counter. I was obviously smitten with her purchase, but I think she got nervous and thought I was going to mug her later. I felt the same way when I was having my late mom's jewelry appraised.
Two recent pickups: The first is 1831 Capped Bust Half Dime, LM-2, R-3 acquired for the half dime die marriage set. Direct purchase from a dealer on EBay. The second is a 1861 $20 Type 1 No Motto Double Eagle for the U.S. Type Set. This one came from a dealer at the Lakeland, FL coin show last Friday. I had a fruitful negotiation with this dealer. Pleasant, business-like. I made an offer, he counter-offered and I accepted. No drama. But another dealer had two No Motto Eagles: 1847-O in PCGS XF-40 and 1849 in PCGS XF-45. I didn't like the coins that much as they were at best only "C" coins for the grade. And, he had a price sticker on them that was ridiculous, call it 50% more than Greysheet. When I asked him about the price, he said "Oh, I haven't repriced them" and then proceeded to INCREASE the price. Then I got to listen to a lecture all about how Greysheet is always wrong and Type 1 Eagles actually sell for much more than I think they should. Couldn't get away from there fast enough. Anyway, enough of my whinging. Here's the coins.
I chuckled about your second booth visit. I'm surprised you didn't get a mind numbing spiel about factory financing and extended warranty.
I have been eyeing this Colonial for quite some time. Yesterday I pulled the trigger. It's actually quite nice for the grade. They rapidly get really expensive as you go up in grade. St Patrick Farthing approx. 1670, VF-35-BN.
