I found a strange coin in my lot of uncleaned romans and byzantines. I am new to this so I am still learning where to research these coins. The front has an anchor with the letters "RESHEN PFENNIG" and the other side has a double headed eagle clutching a sword and a ball, with a coat of arms in the middle. I have searched online all over and can't seem to find anything like it. Seemes out of place with the lot of coins I was cleaning. Was pretty encrusted at start, and came pretty clean in like new condition. Any help would be appreciated. Rick

Greetings and Welcome to the forum. :) What it sounds like is the seller salted your "uncleaned ancients" with a steel 'small dark grey' German ReichsPfennig from around the late 19th or early 20th centuries.

    Thanks for the help

Yes, from research it is a reckoning coin. Haven't been able to find exact info on it, but the inscription basically describes it as a reckoning coin. Evidently they are commonly found in excavations of older coins from what I have read. Again thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Rick
