Hello everyone. I hope you're all doing well and having a nice evening. I started looking into some apparent varieties again (capped bust half dimes in particular) and have come across something that I'm not having much luck on discovering information on. It's listed as "LM-xx" (x being a number of no significance until more information is realized) which I'm assuming is something similar to VAMs in Morgans.

Does anyone here have any info to share regarding this? Even a link to something kind of useful and current would help. Thanks for your time and your assistance, and, as always, have yourselves a wonderful evening!

Russel Logan and John McCloskey published "Federal Half Dimes 1792-1837" which lists all the different die marriages for early half dimes. The book is out of print but can occasionally be found on ebay.

Try this website. It's not perfect but it's pretty good for attribution of the LM die marriages and remarriages. And it will give you rarity ratings as well as a good overview of the entire series.

There are at least two dedicated Capped Bust Half Dime die marriage collectors on Coin Talk, myself and @bikergeek. You can direct questions to us (and others).

@No_Ragrets, as @Publius2 said - I'm happy to look/chat/attribute/opine anytime! I also have a fresh update on the website linked above: its author, Wes, has it back on its original name: http://www.everythinghalfdimes.com/

It's still missing some info, especially for the 1836-37 years, but it's a very useful site.

I recommend surfing the registry sets (and reading owner comments) if you want to eyeball some good examples or compare them to your own coins: https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/ha...-mccloskey-circulation-strikes-1829-1837/2630

I also have a little hobby website with some personal photos of my coins and a buddy's excellent set. Galleries here: https://groovycoins.com/index.php/galleries/

Before the Logan-McCloskey book that @okbustchaser named (when the LM-n naming convention was created), the former best reference was by Daniel Valentine. You still see the occasional "V-n" attribution on slabs or sales/auction sites. The LM book has a cross-reference for V to LM numbers. I have an Excel version of that if anyone would want it.

GREAT set of coins... but I'm biased...

Excellent! Thank you so much for helping me learn a bit more! I was really striking out with searching Google, so I'll read up on that new info tonight. Thanks again!!
