I have a 1970 S Jefferson Nickel that I am having a hard time grading. I would like to get opinions. I would say it definitely has a full 6 steps, and hardly any imperfections at all.

What would you guys say for a grade? IMAG1979.jpg IMAG1981.jpg

It looks like a proof strike to me, which should (by default) have full steps.

It looks like a proof to me, too. The grading services don't attribute Full Steps on proof nickels.

Ahh I see. I think it is a proof I just put it up to the light and it definitely has mirror like fields. Beautiful coin though. I have a 1969 Reg Strike although I believe it is a P that I think may have full steps. I'll have to dig it up. I just learned of the full steps designation lol.

No problem at all - there have been some really informative threads here regarding FS nickels.

Is the flip hiding part of the rim? Shouldn't a proof have a nice squared rim all around? Over top of Jeff's head looks kind of thin. Just curious.

After looking around and doing some reading, it seems to me that with these Jefferson Nickels it comes down to the rim, as sometimes its hard to tell by the fields. I could be wrong, but I purchased a handful of Jefferson Nickels a year or two ago from a gentleman who had labeled the flips. They are labeled PR or Proof for Proofs, and just year and mint mark for business strike.

I am still not convinced it is a proof but maybe I will just roll the dice and send it in... I did compare it to a 1970 S Proof that I have and the rims do not look the same, and the fields are a bit more mirror-like on the 1970 S (which could be because it came from San Francisco) so really it has just added to my confusion LOL.

    I appreciate everyone's input!

The coin in the picture is a proof coin. Please don't send it in to verify, that would be a waste of money.
