Picked up this coin last night after coming home from work. I lost the coin that I had put a "proxy" bid on/ so I checked if any were unsold. To my amazement/ this was still availiable at $2000US including fees and shipping. Sultanate of Gujarat AV Tanka AH 929 (1523) Muhammadad Mint Sultan Shams al-Din Muzaffar II 1511-35 G&G # G233
Not familiar the area, coin type, ruler, symbolism/writing, or history. But it's a cool looking coin!
Found their site - wasn't aware of this auction house from Toronto! Can I ask why you would spend $2K on this coin? I assume either a good investment or a coin of particular meaning to you. What's the deal?
I just liked the coin Indian coinage is really diverse. But, it was also high quality and most Gujarat AV coins are rare. John
Gujarat was a province of the Dehli Sultanate. In the 1400 century a series of civil Wars weakened the Dehli Sultanate. In 1398 Tamerlane invaded India/ leaving a trail of mass murder and utter destruction. Thus when Tamerlane died many former provinces like Gujarat were usurped by former governors and they became sultans. The end came when the Mughals conquered most of the Indian sub continent in 1526.
That is a nice coin, I would like to add an Indian gold coin to my collection, preferably a Mughal gold mohur of Shah Jahan I, but a quality gold coin from either the Gujarat Sultanate or the Bahmani Sultanate would be an acceptable addition as well.
I have only seen one for sale so far, and unfortunately it has both black and red spots, so I of course have no intention of buying it.
