    I'll echo what others have said and offer a visual comparison of two my favorite/best Mercury dimes:

    Side by side there's no mistaking the '44 business strike versus the '42 proof strike.

    I would also like to add, if you have the extra cash, the proof mercury dime is one of the more affordable classic coin proof issues.

    Definitely a high grade coin with natural luster, but not a proof. Probably a MS-62 or better. If you are flexible enough, you could easily sell it!
