How's those steps on a 30 % off center nickel? Other than clipping the left side of the Monticello the strike on the rev. as well as the obv. are pretty nice.
I would say very very nice! Steps plus date plus very nice condition! And may I ask where did you get it?
Years ago I would search bags. I have quite a few Jefferson Off Centers as well as double strikes. Just posting a few for educational purpose, as you'll never be able to find any more since the mint changed the quality assurance on canceling error coins. If interested PM me.
I can't tell @Paddy54 It's a little too blurry when I enlarge it. Am I seeing things? It looks to me like the O/C strike was hit twice. If you look closely at the reverse, there appears to be a secondary curvature at 3 & 11 o'clock. Chris
It is not common knowledge - but should be - that coins struck other than well-centered usually exhibit superior detail such as this. The reason is that there is less surface area upon which the dies impart the press load, effectively increasing the striking pressure on the planchet.
If that is the case, then why are there two crescents separated by a gap at each end? Inquiring minds want to know! Chris
That's what occasionally happens on singly struck off center coins. Perhaps inquiring minds should consult the Internet as I can only comment on what I've seen (as you just did) and not what I always considered an extra mark caused by the side of the collar (?). PS Look at Paddys coin #3...same thing.
