Anyhow, fun and inexpensive to me equals a nice selection of world coins For $100 you can easily get a group 10 nice coins, even throw in a couple silver 19th century European crowns if fairly good condition and still keep it under the spending limit
I just read this thread, and am in Markus' camp. I think you may be naively drawn into a situation you will later regret. Not only could it lose you your job, but it could also jeopardize your ability to get another job after that, should you need to. I'd find a plausible reason not to spend the money tomorrow (not being able to read her mind is reason enough), and then politely and apologetically ask her husband to return the funds to her. Ordinarily it's a cop out to not return the funds to her yourself but, in this case, doing so provides the mechanism for screening the landscape for land mines. Her husband will almost certainly appreciate being kept in the loop, and determine if the intended exchange was innocent, or not. If it is completely innocent, you'll probably be approached by them again. If there is another dynamic at play however, one or both are likely to establish more professional distance from you, after which you can thank your lucky stars you didn't get involved. Good luck, however you decide to proceed.
Excellent point! Just giving the money back to the wife might not work. She may be persistent. Giving the money to the husband might make her think twice before asking another "favor". Chris
I never thought of anything amiss when I first started reading posts. Then almost like out of nowhere posts started turning to the unethical and so on. I might have missed a post or two because I skimmed over some of them, but why are we assuming that getting 100 dollars from her is problematic? That's an assumption. Let's tackle his question because we could make assumptions all day that are irrelevant. For example, one scenario is the boss and his wife are older people and don't have the energy to go, or maybe she's not too enthusiastic but still wants some new coins to see if it renews some interest. 100 dollars may be pocket change for her. Anyhow, the only thing that I'd worry about is getting her coins she's not interested in, or not having receipts available, and so on. Sorry, just curious as to how we got here
Agreed. I'd get her a super nice Morgan with rainbow toning and a bouquet of flowers. OK no flowers ;-)
Only she really knows what she want's and a $100 budget? Probably better to say nothing looked interesting and give her back the money!
I think that the old, "everything was overpriced so I didn't waste your money" allows for an acceptable and face saving exit strategy. Better to act after establishing what is sought perhaps with a *signed* want list. Because, you know, you have "several clients for which you locate possible additions to their collection and it helps you keep straight exactly who is searching for what"..... Lest you find out later that $100 exactly is missing from the company "petty cash" fund....
Would you like to guess how many "husband, wife and a 3rd person" stories I've heard while tending bar for 15 years? It may start out totally harmless, but it rarely ends that way. Chris
I appreciate the Coin Advice given. All the other speculation is not helpful. I should have mentioned that this lady is my brother's mother in law. She see's me as her son. Nothing weird going on. She brought me back some Norweigen coins from her trip to Norway. I was trying to help her out because she likes coins and I don't know many that do.
How about an ancient coin, if your LCS has any? Perhaps she's not been exposed to them before. As for history, they beat almost any moderns and she won't already have whatever ancient coin you select.
Not a bad idea. I don't have an ancient so I wouldn't know where to start. That will be down the road. I think ancients would be a natural progression for me after I get through my US Coins Phase.
Ok, so right now I am shooting for an inexpensive slabbed Walker. I would like to get her a Merc and the IHC and Buffs. What would be the good number of coins to shoot for in the $100.00 range?
Given the last tid bit of information , as to the relationship to this woman is I see no harm. However must say that other posters here had only good intentions as to their life experiences . Stranger things then an affair with the bosses wife have happen......that said from the views of the other members here with the information you supplied only allows speculation of what could be in the works. A word to the wise is sufficient when dealing with co workers, and their spouse no matter what the situation is... Good luck in you're quest.
I can't see you being able to complete this shopping list in the $100 price range. Heck I spent $90 yesterday on one coin. I'm in the quality not quantity camp.
I see what you are saying. Some of the input so far suggested a $30-$40 slabbed Walker would be doable. We came to the conclusion she would like a slab so she could learn about the grading system. So with $70-$60 left I can get more fun things.
In my opinion, one more expensive coin with outstanding eye appeal may be a better choice than a couple of cheaper "garden variety" coins.
