Next year Germany will start issuing a new series of such coins with colored rings. Five issues, one per year, and the theme is the climate zones of our planet. Mintage 2 million per year (unc) plus 300,000 (proof). Those collector coins do not circulate, but apparently the polymer ring pieces are popular ...

    2017: Tropical (red)
    2018: Subtropical (orange)
    2019: Moderate (green)
    2020: Subpolar (turquoise)
    2021: Polar (violet)

Aaaaaaaah. :D Went to a coin show in Dortmund today http://www.westfaelische-muenzenmesse.de where one of the attractions was a wheel of fortune, sort of - you could turn the wheel, and if the pointer stopped in a marked field, you would get one of those €5 with the polymer ring. Now I never win anything (also because I don't play the lottery or so ...) but today I did win one of those coins. A well invested admission fee, hehe.

I can't help wondering how hard you have to push to pop the middle out.

Well, this one I gave away, so I would need another sample to try it out ... Guess that, like a bimetallic coin, it would not survive a brute force attack. But since the €5 pieces are not made for circulation, and people are willing to pay more than face value for an intact :) piece, there won't be many who have taken theirs apart.

There are always a few who can't resist , a Coin doktor might substitute a red ring as an error. :)

Here we have the design of the next one, to be issued in April. What you are supposed to see is a parrot (and a few background birds) plus some tropical tree giants. Oh well, not boring and not thrilling in my opinion ...
