Why PCGS didn't give MS 70 grade to 1996 silver eagles.? I can't believe that US Mint didn't strike silver eagle in 1996 which can be graded MS 70. In my opinion PCGS population report is fake. They keep the population report lower and prices higher . PCGS is a elite grading company and many collectors accept only PCGS graded coins, but I can't believe that PCGS didn't find any 1996 business strike silver eagle, which could be graded PCGS MS70.

That is a GREAT POINT. Think about it, either PCGS or NGC could have control of the entire market through their control that they can have on coins (their grade, the population reports that they menchonied)

I think that PCGS isn't a independent grading company. I have beautiful examples of 1996 eagles but I don't send it them, because I am sure it will be back with MS 69 or lower. Maybe they keep MS70 for coin actions, where someone will buy it for 20 or 26000 dollars.

Maybe it is because there haven't been any 70's submitted.

It never ceases to amaze me when people complain about PCGS and/or NGC controlling the market. Has anyone.....anyone.....ever seen these companies selling coins?

1996 silver eagle just a regular silver coin with lower mintage . There's nothing unusual. Do you think that there isn't any MS70 grade out of 10 million strike? It's 10 years now and 0 population for MS70.

That's 'cause 'early guys' didn't give a 'hang' about grade.

My point is that many collectors can't tell the difference between a 70 and a 69 and so they're not going to waste their money submitting them just for a 69. No offense intended, but can you?

Besides that, there have been years when other denominations had pitiful production results. Right offhand, the 2004-P Peace Medal nickel business strike comes to mind. I remember searching through about 5,000 of them without even finding an MS67. If I recall, the same problem arose with some of the 2005 Satin Finish coins. What makes you think that this same "run of bad luck" can't apply to the SAE?

I suspect it's because of the guarantee liability...

Good point but I think there is something wrong with this grading company. Do you think that in 1996 the US Mint strike low quality coins than in 1986 which is a first year of silver eagle production.?

I'm not one to speculate on why it happened, and you can't compare one year of production to another.

I don't understand what is so hard about separating an MS-70 SE from the other grades.

Try this. A 70 is perfect. Now PCGS and NGC will usually ignore the tiny mint made pits in the luster (mostly struck thru's) and the tiny lint marks caused in the same way. I DON'T and you should not either.

So look at the coin in hand - no magnification the way the graders do. Make a quick scan of both sides. any hit, scuff or hairline and it is a reject. In order to see things you need to tip and rotate the coin thru 360 degrees while tipping it back and forth at the same time.

Now pick up a hand lens. Have a plan. Divide each side up into sections and look for any hits or imperfections. Check the letters as these often have a mark or two from removal out of the tubes. Look for any spots. Florescent light shows these up better. Hairlines are usually in the fields. Scrapes are on the shield and Liberty's relief.

Stains drop it too; be very tight. You are not a grader and can look for perfection.:D

Zackly! The graders get paid for their performance. I have the luxury of taking my time.

Am I correct in assuming only a fraction of the 1996ers have been submitted for grading at all,?

I don't have any idea how many have been submitted to PCGS and NGC.

No idea what the OP is talking about. A quick look at the PCGS ASE census shows one MS70 in 1996, as well as one each in 1990, '92 and '93. The highest number for any year that decade is 24, with only three years having more than 5 examples in MS70.
It seems it was just not a time when people were submitting them fresh out of the mint. And by the time they floated around there may well have developed issues to prevent that grade on most of the coins.

if you MUST have one by PCGS, there are a few NGC 70s and you can cross grade it over :)
