It looks pretty close to the AU50 example (for 1917-1924) on PCGS's Photograde app, so I'll go AU50 with a really weak strike.
AU-53. With this much luster and weak strike they will say AU. Note: I have not guessed correctly ever.
Take a stab...nothing to loose. The coin is a poster child for an XF. It has most of its mint luster; yet lots of missing design. Some of the missing design is due to weakness. Some due to actual wear. So IMO, all the XF members are 100% correct. IMO, there is also no way that this could ever be graded VF or UNC. The problem comes when a TPGS becomes involved! IMO, if it is not in one now, this coin will eventually end up in an AU slab. That's why I guessed AU. I should NEVER buy it as an AU-anything but I'd sell it as an AU-55 and sleep like a baby. Now AU-50 or 53? Color is not especially attractive. If the TPGS goes AU, I think they will give it a 53 rather than a 50 (closer to its actual grade) because of the "clean" surfaces. See easy, now it's your turn
OK. Hang up the pinata. Blindfold me. Spin me around in a circle. Duck everyone! I will go with XF45. But trying to outguess the TPG (an idiot's undertaking for me), I will say it got an AU50, whether it should or not being beside the point.
After a closer look, I think I will revise my observation to AU 50. The leg and date look good enough for that grade.
Sorry folks, I loved all the discussion going on about this coin Shame to see it end and reveal the grade!!! If it makes the reveal any sweeter, many of you had it right.....the coin is graded XF-40. I bought it for a high XF price because the luster is still pretty strong, even giving a cartwheel in-hand. Details are very weak though, I was conflicted with it and am glad to see the discussion had mixed feelings too! Thanks to all who posted and congrats to those who hit the nail on the head! Your prize shall be Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness....enjoy!
great coin for a GTG! when I saw the luster I thought "xf, weak strike" but still had my doubts. checked Cline's book, this issue is notorious for weak strikes, over 11 million struck and the dies were used way past their intended life. Of MS examples, <3% have FH, according to Cline.
Look at him, even the slab may only be touched using gloves Technically it's rather a VF35 which got a bump to XF due to weak strike and the remaining luster in my opinion.
