I have yet to, buy, my first Gold.

I found a 1903 5$, smooth surfaces.
Really an evenly worn piece, there was a nic or two on the date. Toned to a rosy -orangish red. Dark on the cheek / no lustre. Periferals were in mint state though dinged.face and eagle were pretty. 3 days till I can buy it!

I've yet to buy my first gold either. Though ironically, my 6 month old daughter owns a US gold coin and I have to hold onto it for her for 17.5 years or more until she takes ownership. It's a slight burr in my side...

 

There isn't much of a premium for a 1903 for a really nice AU/BU coin. Is there a reason you want a more worn one? All coins deserve a home, but the difference in price between a VF and AU is like $5? One would think you might like a higher grade coin for your first gold.

There are a lot of nice $5 gold pieces out there in AU and MS grades. And I'm not talking an arm and a leg for one.

That is what I meant. A decent AU of a common $5 is darned near melt anyway. I just bought one in high XF in the 1880's for about $10 over melt. For common dates almost no premium until better BU grades.

 

And if this will be your first gold coin purchase, may I suggest you go with a slabbed version?

 

Very Interesting! Gold is on the rise again, and you're stated finding XF $5 Liberty Gold coins @~$330 and AU coins @ $335. Could you say where these stated "common-place" bargains are offered/found, so that our young associate can heed your advice? APMEX is offering XF random date raw $5 Liberties @ ~400 each.

 

Sorry, but from all I've read in this thread you shouldn't buy that coin. Don't buy a raw gold coin (or problem coin) just to save a couple of bucks. APMEX has fair prices and so do most of the known dealers here on CT. Why don't you try the WTB section?

 

Although others have avoided posting facts which will assist you in your purchase decision, the current melt value of that coin is ~$320. If the coin has return options, is acceptable in appearance. a weight of ~8.359 grams, and not magnetic, welcome to the world of Gold ownership!! It has been my experience that purchases on this site don't have the safeguards of eBay, while having the same downside possibilities of eBay, without recourse/responsibility/feedback. Use your common-sense! The advice received here is often worth what you paid.

I have bought plenty of coins from CT members and paid via PP. I don't see a reason why buyer protection shouldn't apply as long as F&F is not selected and money is not sent in multiple installments.

Maybe I am missing something?

 

Have you had a successful claim/settlement with this firm which
I believe you'll find well documented has stolen million of dollars from clients accounts, paying the plaintiffs attorneys a token payment for an out of court settlement, while still requiring, ~12 years later that the plaintiffs prove their loss?

I suspect not, as I have, on more than one occasion, where they suggest alternate actions to a PayPal claim.

I suggest that your purchases/contracts on this site have been for a relatively minimal payment amount transaction with PayPal.

Unless an individual knows of another who has had successful transactions of like value on this site, I recommend caution.

Um, a local dealer. He calls me when he has such stuff. I paid $330 for a $5. About a month earlier I bought a nice AU 1878 S eagle for $680.

 

I am definitely leaning towards a slabbed coin, the Denver Mint is only about a Half hour away. I agree not knowing enough about the surfaces of a circulated coin. An Ms example will be the way I go.

Excellent decision. It's not really important how much you spend on your first gold coin, but you should buy the "right" coin and be happy with it...

 

I was at a shop today looking at a Coronet Head Dollar Au58 Straight graded ANACS.
He said grey sheet was 900. I believe it was a 49. There wasn't an attribution
If I take some pics and put it on hold could I get some help with the purchase? Grade etc?
