Greetings on this blessed Sunday. I've just acquired this silver tetradrachm representing Athena and the famous old owl. The coin weighs 16.85 g. I picked it up among many others which are still offered. Please post your kind comments. Thanks..
Charles, this and your other recent owl tet post have caused me to do more reading about them, so thanks Reid Goldsborough's article covers a lot of ground and is very interesting. Although it's hard to say with certainty, I think your new coin is a Classical Owl Type C (c. 431-393 BCE)-- a late "mass emission" tetradrachm. As you can see from his article, there are many unknowns about these owl tets. One of these days I should look for one for my collection. I keep putting it off because they are so abundant (I'll be able to buy one tomorrow/next month/next year) and because they are priced higher than I want relative to my level of interest. It's certainly a type that should be represented by anyone who collects ancient Greek coins.
Why do we meet this chop between the eyes of the owl from time to time. I remember Steve and another coin-friend posting an Athena Tet with this chop there, always between the eyes. It can't be a coincidence. Any guess or explanation please.
I saw an owl not to long ago on FAC. I believe I bid on it but was promptly outbid I could've waited & possibly won it. Now all the owls are popping up on here. I'm wondering if maybe I should've stayed with it. Has been on my want list for a while now. Maybe like TIF did recently, waiting for that second chance may pay off later. Great owl nice coin congrats!!
