Found this coin about 20 years ago in Greenlee County, AZ and I have held onto knowing that this coin was really old! I have had places offer me a good size of money for it and I did not want to sell it because I did not know what is was! Please help me with some info on this coin..... Thank You
Well, if authentic the coin was lost far from home. Perhaps some collector lost it, or perhaps it isn't authentic. There are several members of CoinTalk who can tell you more about your coin-- I'm not knowledgable of medieval Indian coins-- but to me it looks like a (or is trying to look like) Indian or Sri Lankan. Calling @THCoins, @Ancientnoob... There are a handful of CoinTalk threads about this general type of coin. Here's one: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/indian-auction-win-raja-raja-chola.266107/
Kind of looks like an "octopus man" coin...India, the Cholla dynasty. Put octopus man coin on google and check out the images.
It appears to be Sahasamalla of the Okkaka. http://lakdiva.org/coins/medievallanka/1200_1202_sahasamalla.html
There are only a few very uncommon fakes of this very common coin. Most are not really fake but rather late 19th century Museum reproduction that are about half the weight of the normal Massa/ Kasu.
=> unless you plan on collecting ancient coins, I'd sell Octopus Man to the next fella that offers you a good size of money Oh sorry, how rude of me => welcome "Justin" ... hey, but be careful, because if you decide to keep it => these ancient coins can become somewhat addictive!!
I would sell octopus man to the next guy that offered me big money! Except for the silver and gold they are of legendary rarity and are worth big money what ever someone thinks they are worth. Your example is not horrid but would fetch an Alexander Hamilton.
