Yesterday I saw a beautiful South African restrike of a 1937 Crown for Edward VIII. But Std Cat World Coins doesn't show ANYTHING between George V and George VI for either Britain or South Africa. Does anybody know if any Edward VIII coins got minted and put in circulation, or did they all get melted down after his abdication? After all, he was king for almost a year (Jan-Dec 1936--which makes the 1937 pattern crown especially curious).
Hopefully this will help! http://www.cointalk.com/t5049/ http://www.cointalk.com/t77272/ http://www.cointalk.com/t48741/ http://www.cointalk.com/t10790/ http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/monarchs/edwa8.html -Shrek
This British newspaper front page has a small article on coins at the bottom: Daily Herald newspaper, December 11, 1936 No coins of King Edward
No UK coins for Edward VIII were issued. Some were prepared, and a very small number of proof sets were produced. Most of the designs were subsequently used for George VI's coinage, except that 2 shillings (English & Scottish) were minted for George VI, and the Royal Standard (flag) on the George VI halfcrown (2/6) was curved, rather than the rectangular design for Edward VIII. Some 3d pieces were made to test their use in vending machines, and some 'escaped' - they're mainly of the same design as George VI's (thrift plant, date below), and command a hefty price on the rare occasion they come up for sale. Apart from that, there were 4 denominations of stamps printed. The only coins were from East Africa, British West Africa and Fiji, but none of them used an effigy of the king. There's a picture of an Edward VIII penny here: http://www.ukcoinpics.co.uk/pen5.html
In The King's Speech there is an erroneous reference to a circulation Edward VIII shilling, when George VI pays Lionel for the bet they make at their first meeting.
new guinea, fiji, british east africa and british west africa all issued coins for circulation bearing edward VIII legend, and the indian states of jaipur and kutch issued coins bearing his name in local script, the plethora of crowns available from various countries are fantasy pieces
I should have said that the film's error was saying that Edward VIII's picture was on the shilling. The several people who showed the colonial pieces with his name but not his image are completely right.
No British coins went into circulation but some proof sets were madeI bought the 1937 Sovereign as it is the key date for any collector of sovereigns. Six were minted, four sets are in British museums, the Queen has a set, one full set is held privately and this beautiful coin is the only one available on its own. It tells the story of love over title, Edward abdicated and gave up the highest office in the world for his true love. Rarity History and love story makes this one of the key coins in the entire British series. It's part of Viceroy Coins collection edited - forum rules and I'm proud to hold the world record. It was a fantastic experience to buy it during a fiercely contested auction. Jordan Lott
Here is one of the Edward VIII fantasy coins: Southern Rhodesia Fantasy Edward VIII Crown from the "Spink Patina Collection", made around 2001 By the way, there are no references to an "Edward VIII shilling" in "The King's Speech". Lionel says "Like your dad". Bertie (George VI) says: "Precisely". Lionel says "He's not here any more". Bertie says "He's on that shilling I gave you". They are referring to Bertie's dad, George V. Lionel then says "Your face is next, mate".
If you have pictures of your coin, or any of the other specimens, I'd love to see them! Were any shillings made? I used to collect shillings, and I'm still fond of them.
Your numbers don't add up. You account for 7, but state only 6 were minted. ---------------------------------------- 4 British Museums 1 Queen's set 1 Full set held privately 1 available on it's own (you own) ---------------------------------------- 7 coins (?)
Here are some examples of Edward VIII issues from the Princely State of Kutch, struck 1936 (VS 1992 and 1993). Kutch 3 dokda, 1936/VS1993: Kutch 2 1/2 kori, 1936/VS1992:
