Can anyone help me identify this? Most like it's an Ottoman coin, though I know sometimes coins from Egypt or the Indian states can be similar. I see the year 1255 in the Islamic calendar. I can't find a year of the ruler's tenure. It doesn't seem to be magnetic. It's a little smaller than a dime. I'm hoping somehow this could turn out to be gold, though I know that is extremely unlikely seeing as how I paid 15 cents for it.
I think I found the monarch year as 12. To me it looks like the 25 or 50 kurus, which is gold, but I'd like someone else's opinion. The 25 doesn't seem to have been made in year 12, which would make it 50 I think, but I'm far from an expert here.
No one? I think it's this coin, but the 25 Kurush and 50 kurush look the same. The only difference I can see is mine is year 12 and that was only made in the 50. I'd like someone to confirm this. It's a great find if I'm right. http://www.coinfactswiki.com/wiki/Turkey_AH1255(12)_50_kurush
Perhaps you should focus on whether its even gold. How about telling us the weight, diameter and thickness.
It's 15mm. I don't have a way to weigh it or measure the thickness. It's non-magnetic and has a reeded edge.
It could easily be 14 mm. I just used the circles at the front of Krause to measure it. Here's another pic but I don't know if it's any better. The scanner has trouble with small coins, and my camera doesn't zoom this close.
Thanks. This has to be by far the best coin I've found in a junk bin. It just goes to show that it is worth the time to check. I think this one slipped through because it's Islamic so it's harder to identify and they just didn't realize what they had.
Also because so many novelty/belly dancer copies of these are seen by anyone handling bulk foreign coins. They are too small to have an easily noticeable weight difference in hand, so I think sometimes genuine ones are assumed to the the common copies. You should of course make sure it's gold. Just because the details look right is not a guarantee.
I agree that it closely fits a 25 kurush in design and diameter, but color is odd. Should weigh about 1.75g. I don't clearly see that it is year 17 though, almost looks like a 15, but that would not be possible in this denomination.
It is a scan so that throws the color off a bit. I don't have a way to weigh it right now. Eventually I'll take it to a coin shop and get a professional opinion, but for now this is probably as good as I can do.
