The markings do seem to align but I'll wait for the experts to chime in.

Seeing as ANACS called it the overdate and some of the markers in the photo your provided for reference look like they match up, I would be fairly confident in calling it the overdate variety. With that said, I would be more confident in attributing it with better images or in hand.

To be more clear- there is no doubt in my mind that this is the same die pair as shown in the Breen encyclopedia.
MY QUESTION is whether you think this is AN ACTUAL OVERDATE or not, being that this is the 1st I've ever heard of it. Have any earlier die state examples come to light? Has anyone proved or disproved this as being an overdate, since the reference book is 30 years old

Gotcha.. Comparing the 2 on my '42 to the Breen image above. The shape of the underlying image looks like a good match. But I won't know for sure as I don't have an example in my hand nor do I have a copy of the Breen Encyclopedia.

I have not seen one of these in so long I forgot they existed! If I recall, this is considered an overdate by many;however, just as many say no, it's an RPM. I know some grading services would get around the controversy (just as they do for the 14/13 5c) by putting the Breen # on the label.

In the case of your coin, I'll guarantee NGC either:

First choice - missed the variety.
Second choice - did not assign one as no variety tier was paid for.
Third choice - Does not recognize the variety. If this is the case, IMO they are nuts.

At least one second tier TPGS would have attributed it for free even though the submitter did not know what he had.

EDIT: I better look before I leap!:facepalm: NGC does what they should do in these cases, use the Breen # and let folks fight it out.

EDIT: I better look before I leap! Again...:facepalm:

Great Point! :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious: I did not want to name grading services but ANACS & ICG are the two that I should expect to catch this one and attribute it w/o charge due to their typically outstanding customer service.

I should not get past Max or Jay (if he got to see it as he is doing foreign coins) either ut I don't know if NGC or PCGS does these.

This is in one of the working hubs. Many of the hubs show doubling for 1943, as most 1943 halves of all dates are doubled. Could be a 2, could be a 3, but it's so common that either way there no interest and no premium.

The outline under the "3" IS NOT COMMON. The doubling on IGWT is.

When a dealer first told me about it at a show I went looking, found 2 and sold him both in BU. We thought they were a rare new variety. When I tried to sell him two more I found soon after at the same show, he didn't want them! We both learned they must not be anything rare or special.:jawdrop:

Goodnight guys... Big Money (Razorback fan) is taking me to see the new football movie "Greater." Suppose to be as good or better than "Rudy."

If it is an overdate it would have to have occurred in the same way the other 20th century overdates were created, with a die hubbed with a 1942 hub being hubbed with a 1943 hub on the second squeeze. If that is the case an overlay of a 1942 coin would show the 2 in the same position as the curve on Breen 5197.

Yes. Otherwise the engraver started to punch the "3" in too high. Someday, all this may get settled.
