Julia Domna Moesia Inferior, Marcianopolis 24 mm 8.6 g Obv: ΙΟVΛΙΑ ΔΟΜΝΑ CΕΒ, Bare-headed and draped bust r. Rev: ΜΑΡΚΙΑΝΟΠΟΛΙΤΩΝ, Statuary group of the Three Graces side by side. Sear Greek Imp 2313; AMNG 603; Moushmov 417. It looks like before striking, some crud filled up the reverse die in the N at the end of the inscription as well as part of the left leg of the Grace on the right.
Sweet looking coin Zumbly. Been trying to get my hands on a Three Graces coin, but the better examples I see are usually pretty pricey.
Great coins. I picked up a 3 Graces several years ago when CNG sold the Mark Stahl collection. My coin is in the book, color plates 1 & 2. Roman Provindial Moesia Inferior, Mardianopolis Julia Domna, Augusta 193 - 217 AD, 7.38 g, 23 mm, 6h Draped bust Right / the 3 Graces standing gracefully Staal 15.1.3.16.6
Three forest nymphs, gracefully holding up five trees. P. Accoleius Lariscolus, Crawford 486/1, 43 BC:
Sweet acquisition zumbly! A graceful, charming and beauty of a coin. Syria, Decapolis, Gadara. Gordian III. The Three Graces.AD 238-244. Æ20, 3.60g., 11h. Dated CY 304 (AD 240/1). Obv: Radiate head right, Rev: The Three Graces. Rosenberger 92; Spijkerman 92; SNG ANS 1341
LOL, be careful folks! Your GREAT-Great-Great-to-the-10th-Grandmother may had posed for that 'Reverse' !!!
I saw another one of these recently and could not pass on the 25 GBP bid price. The coin is the one I have shown above, so no new post series for this one. I think the coin is better in hand than the seller's pics or mine (shown on blue). In the sale, I thought two of the Graces were facing away. On further inspection, only the middle one is facing away.
We receive plenty of junk mail. I am not sure how my name was added to The Met's list, but they do have an interesting catalog. I am not sure my wife would approve of this addition to my Three Graces collection, but you can get one here - http://store.metmuseum.org/sculpture/the-three-graces-sculpture/invt/80017478
I'm resurrecting @zumbly's old thread because I finally acquired a Three Graces coin and it's a double die match to his coin MOESIA INFERIOR, Marcianopolis. Commodus AE 25mm, 8.5 gm circa CE 177-192 Obv: ΑΥ ΚΑΙ Λ ΑΥΡΗ ΚΟΜΟΔΟС; bareheaded, draped, and cuirassed bust right Rev: ΜΑΡΚΙΑΝΟΠΟΛЄΙΤΩΝ; the Three Graces standing facing, heads left, right, and right, respectively: the left holds amphora over dolphin, the center drapes arms over others, and the right holds wreath over amphora Ref: Hristova & Jekov 6.10.26.4; RPC IV online 4319; Varbanov 702 corr. (direction of heads).
Fantastic coin... I especially like the full legends and beautiful patina. A great match for Z's fantastic example!
