Trying to find out if this is a 3 over 2 variety or just extra metal on this Shield nickel. Any help or opinion appreciated.
I believe that @Paddy54 is quite knowledgable about these. Hopefully he can provide some insight. (Apologies if I was thinking of the wrong person; it's been a long day)
It's hard for me to tell, either way. I don't collect this series, so I would be interested to know what a "2" and a "3" for this series would look like. Chris
Sorry to say not the 3/2 it's known as the filled 2, see mine above Mine also has a die chip that some try and say it's part of the 2 and it is not.
I think you're right and I thought so when I bought it but for $7 it was worth it either way. I think it will grade VF30 and I'll try and get a decent picture to post in the nickel thread later. Thanks for the reply.
$7 for any VF shield nickel is a great buy in my book! I paied $10 when I just started collecting coins for a 1866 no rays in VG-F condition (It may have been $9)
That is not the 3/2, Altho I have seen some dealers mark it that way. And, they were not happy when I told them they were wrong.
I stopped telling dealers about this because some of them were quite hostile, although a few were genuinely interested. This coin is a very common filled 2, not a 3/2.
yes. Thanks for agreeing. And as for the dealers, well some agree others wait for me to leave, and put it back in the case
Yeah - at one local show I tried to explain to two dealers it was a filled 2 and being told I did not have a clue was enough for me. So when I see them now I just move on.
I have learned to not tell the dealer but to ask questions. In this case I would ask if the coin could just be a filled 2. That gives the dealer the chance to teach why he thinks the coin is the 3/2. You can learn a lot about a dealer by just letting them talk.
