Here's another example of an overgraded coin. I feel bad for the collector that bought this gem. http://cgi.ebay.com/1945-WALKING-LI...5QQihZ012QQcategoryZ41101QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
MS 66?!?! Looks like it was cleaned with a Brillo pad. It's hard to feel bad for someone who bought it with those pics posted of it though.
Looks original, to me. I don't see any problems with it. I believe the buyer paid what it was worth to him.
speaking of Ebay Speaking of Ebay, heres a few I picked up last week: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230141734674 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290128332628 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=011&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=320128119039&rd=1&rd=1 Thats enough for a week, I'll start again after the holiday.
gopher: That is one strong strike, even though it is a Philly, it is still strong. The toning looks good, to me. So, the buyer may not have done badly. NTC, especially the early ones, are not all bad grades. They are also pretty good with circs and at spotting fakes.
Jack; You had a very good week, the S VDB is very nice and a good price. Also, the 42/1 looks like you stole it at that price. Good luck.
I also didn't see any problems with the coin---looks alright to me! Jack--you got some really nice coins! The 42/1 you got at a pretty good price! I've looked at items from the seller that you got your S VDB from but never would BID because it seems like if he isn't getting the bids that he wants on an items he pulls its right before it ends and then relists it again. I've watched him do that more than once and just have to wonder what he is doing... Speedy
it's hard to tell from the pictures, but it could be a 66. do you think it's not a 66 because of the toning? -steve
I agree....I've had quite a few NTC coins come over the counter lately, and I'll tell you, they're not too bad !! This Walker only needs to be a '65', and it appears that it very well could be, and it's worth all the money. Paul
Are you guys saying that you really think there is a chance that this coin will crossover PCGS as a MS66? I doubt it. That coins strike does not look particularly stronger than other BU Walkers I have seen. In addition, that is some ugly and uneven toning. And at the price he's paid, if it doesn't grade at least MS65 then this buyer has greatly overpaid. I just think the buyer is crazy to spend $150 on a high grade Walking Liberty that was not graded by either PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. Now, if the winning bidder had snagged this coin for say $49 then you probably would not be seeing this thread from me.
Where's the B and the R? And the rays coming off of the sun look worn. I have a PCGS 65 Walker, and it makes that one listed on Ebay look like trash.
how can the rays be "worn" but not the leg, skirt, or right hand? this is a 1945, an odd year. odd years used the previous year's die with a re-punched date. i'm willing to bet this coin was minted from a well worn die and there are some die cracks on this coin that are not visible in the pictures. maybe some die filling is also present. you have to get past the toning and look at the surface - once you grade the surface, then evaluate the toning - does it detract or enhance. for me, this coin would be at most a 65 due to the toning - i don't find it attractive, but it's not horrid. -steve
I would have to agree. That coin is MS with a tone which looks like vomit, which probably would chuck in the AU-58 box.
I don't care for the spotty toning on the coin, but I can't argue with the grade it's been given. There is a lot of great detail there. Guy~
That piece is actually one of the better coins I have seen in an NTC holder. Hard to tell the exact grade, but it has a 65 look to me with original surfaces. I don't think it was such a bad buy.
