Hmm, I seem to have no drinking vessels. I guess I won't be hosting a drinking party! I do have an amphora, although it is rather garbled. LACONIA, Lakedaimon (Sparta) 80-50 BCE AR triobol, 2.29 gm Obv: Head of Herakles right Rev: Amphora; to each side, caps of the Dioscuri; all within laurel wreath Ref: BCD Peloponnesos 868 And I have one lonely coin from Calabria. CALABRIA, Tarentum 325-280 BCE AR litra, 11 mm, 0.56 gm Obv: cockle shell Rev: dolphin right, grapes (?) below Ref: Vlasto 1527, if grapes freed from an NGC slab
I knew I had at least one with a clear 'Amphora' and not just as a 'control. device'....and I finally 'rediscovered' it LOL My tiny obol from Thaos, Thrace (Satyr being frisky obverse):
Thanks for posting your sweet examples, TIF and Mikey-Z ... => TIF ... apparently you don't drink nearly enough in your "older age" eh? (perhaps you burned like a comet in high-school?) ... some people just get-high on life (good for you) ... I myself, still need a wee bit of rocket-fuel to get back to "top-dead-center"
Nice triobol of Sparta, TIF! I don't know if you collect references along with your coins like I do, but it is also HGC 5 612. I let it get out of hand sometimes. I have 11 references for one of my coins!
Thank you for that additional reference! I'm trying to be more diligent about checking the references provided by sellers since I'm finding many mistakes as I'm tidying up my website. Ideally, I should only cite references I'm actually checked myself, or had a trusted friend (who owns the relevant book) check.
Phalanthos riding dolphin to left, holding a kantharos in his extended right hand Youthful Dionysos reclining left, on the back of a panther moving to right, holding a kantharos in his extended right hand
Can I post my 30 dollar coin next to ancientnut's gold? Does Dionysos look tipsy here? He's spilling all the wine on his pet panther! Lydia, Saitta. Pseudo-autonomous AE22. Obv: Bust of Senate r. Rev: Dionysos holding kantharos and thyrsos, at his feet, panther.
