Picked this one up at a pawn shop a few years back. Came up one coin short when I sent some coins in for cert and decided to throw this one in. Care to take a stab at the grade?

Forgot to mention, I put this coin next to some spendier coins, and I like this one more just for the eye appeal. Gotta love a toned beauty like this. All opinions welcome.

My quick stab at this slab... I think it came back MS65. (Is it NGC?) The obverse has a wonderful full strike, the reverse a little weak, but I see that quite often on the 38's... Obverse is beautiful with only a few small marks and the reverse is only distracted by the knick in the steps area (and lack of steps detail)... A handsome addition to any collection!

    Nice coin.
It probably looks different in hand but I'll just give my opinion based on what I see in the picture.

I don't see any wear, so I'll assume it's uncirculated.
It's a bit dark, which hides some of the luster (and usually some of the contact marks), but there is enough evidence to make me believe that it would warrent being described as "Brilliant".
It has a weake strike, on both obverse and reverse, for this particular issue, which is easily found with sharp details.

Overall, I would have no problem grading it a BU.
    Again, nice coin.

I'm going to say that it is graded MS63.

Really? the obverse seems quite strong to me with great detail even in low reliefe areas like the front of the neck as well a good detail in the hair... While my specialty is Buffs, I could be wrong in my assement... What on the obverse is weak? Not trying to be critical at all, honest, I just want to get a little more educated as it seems there are quite a few Jefferson experts and collectors in this forum that I could learn from.

    Hi, Daniel.

This issue (!938-D), is often found with hair detail that is razor sharp.
I don't see that on my computer screen.
Maybe it's something to do with my computer, but again, I can only go by what I see.
    Hope that clarifies my statements.

I'm not an expert on Jeffersons, so my guess of MS63 is just that...a guess. I like the nice toning. The lettering seems sharp, though to me the relief seems flat on the Monticello building on the reverse. It may just be the photo, however. Anyways, great coin!

Thanks for the comments. I only wish I could find a buffalo with this kind of color that wasn't too $$$.

I'll give more people a chance at a grade guess and reveal tomorrow.

I too would say about MS60. However, I am not a great Jefferson Nickel appreciator so might be better but

When sent in I thought it would hit gem, but NGC went a point down on it. Good call Frank!
