    ancientcoinguru: It's not a naval ram but a prow. This one belongs to a city in Thrace.

    This is a great quiz.

    Provincials are a little more obscure for most people so it is more challenging.

    I personally find them more interesting than imperial coins.

    Zumbly: E is correct
    stevex6: not Lycia but a city in Thrace.

    Thanks Theodosius. I am trying to generate some interest in provincials.

    J = Coela, Thrace?

    BTW, I know next to nothing about provincial coinage, so appreciate the opportunity to learn something.:)

    I'm all for this but I believe the correct place would be a separate thread, perhaps asking each member to post their favorite Provincials. You could specify a number or guidelines like all from different places or set categories like ugliest die work, largest/smallest, most unusual or.... you could just open it up and see what came in. There must be a million of them.

    Ancientcoinguru: J is corect. There are different reverse types for Coela, but the prow is dominate.

    @dougsmit: I will use your suggestions. Any interest in it is a good thing.

    The current answers are:

    C = Mesopotamia, Nisibis
    D = Emesa
    E = Caesaraea Maritima
    H = Areopolis
    J = Coela, Thrace

    Did I forget any?

    I don't know any off the top of my head but I'm going to try and see if I can figure it out.

    Thanks Jwt, I have not had time to do this yet. Let's go with Rabbathmoba for H.

    So far we have:

    A
    B
    C Nisbis, Mesopotamia
    D Emesa, Syria
    E Caesarea Maritima, Samaria
    F
    G
    H Rabbathmoba, Palastine
    I
    J Coela, Thrace

    I am completely clueless here so am learning every second.
    For F I can only associate the Lyre with Apollo. Apollonis?

    I was going to guess Lydia for F.

    I reminds me of Thessalian League coinage depictions of Athena. Koinon?

    A's style looked Judaean to me... Askalon in particular. I missed the deity though and learned something upon searching for the type. Assumming A is indeed a coin from Asklalon, the figure standing facing is Phanebal.

    From the British Museum's website:

    Phanebal:

    War god of Ascalon. A fusion of the Phoenician deities Ba'al and Tanit, Phanebal usually appears wearing a long chiton and helmet, and holds a sword or harpoon and a shield or palm branch. The complex structure of the temple of Phanebal at Ascalon is known from the Roman Provincial coins of that city.
