I have been working on a 3rd Century set so have been looking for a Hostilian. Also, have been reading about the Viminacium mint online. This one will do nicely for me Sorry the pics are not better, best I can get for now. Hostilian, 251 AD, AE 27, 10.66 grams O: VAL HOST M QUINTVS CAE, Bareheaded and draped bust rt. RX: PMS COL VIM, Moesia to left between bull and lion Exergue: ANXIII http://viminacium.org.rs/en/
There is a great little book of 58pg and a few plates by Aleksandar Koczev "Catalog provincial coins of Viminacium the capital of the Roman province of Upper Moesia" (2008) The photos are not very good, but it is mostly line drawings. It's useful because it lets you know which coins were struck by who and the legend varities for each. This website covers all that and more- http://www.viminacium.nl/English index.html
I like it @TJC ! Here's mine but from Philip I: Philip I, AD 244-248 AE, 15.1g, 28mm; 6h; Viminacium, AD 248 Obv.: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG; laureate, draped, & cuirassed bust right Rev.: P M S COL VIM; Moesia standing, looking left between bull and lion In Ex.: AN VIIII
Nice capture @TJC ! Love the Bull and Lion depiction... My Viminacium mints RI Hostilian 251 CE AE 27 Viminnacium Moesia Bull-Lion RI Aemilianus 253 CE AE24 Viminacium mint Moesia Bull-Lion - Damnatio Memoriae
Nice OP coin! Viminacium is definitely a place to visit if you're checking off some of the scarcer emperors like Hostilian and Aemilian.
At Victor: Thanks of the very cool references! Great Viminacium and Hostilian coins you guys are sharing! I was going to post this next coin in separate thread but seeing all these Bull and Lion coins has prompted me expand to the Dacia with the Eagle and Lion reverse. This one is in tough shape but the price was right and the short reigning emperors can difficult to get on a budget. Aemillian, AE 25, Dacia, 253 AD O: IMP CM AEMIL AEMILIANVS AVG, Laureate draped cuirassed bust rt. RX: PROVINCIA DACIA, Dacia w/ Phrygian cap, eagle left w/ wings spread, laurel wreath in beak. Lion walking left on right. Dacia is holding a vexillum left and right.
