I bought my first Hogmouth. Been looking for one for a long time. The dealer pulled out an AU58 that was really out of my budget. It was absolutely amazing. Had to settle for a lower grade. I really like the coin but have been having trouble attributing it. As most of the references just don't have photos. The most prevalent attribution is Davis 3262. Problem is that they are shown with a large bust and a smaller bust. This one is the larger bust, and I can't find any attribution that matches. Maybe I am missing the right mint? Does anyone have any Davis records? Post em if you got em.
Cant help you with any attributions, but I have his little brother here on my desk in a 3 Kreuzer version.
My example. Leopold I, "Hogmouth" (1657 - 1705 A.D.) AR Thaler O: LEOPOLDVS D G RO I S A GER HV BO REX; Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. R: ARCHIDVX AVS DVX BVR MAR MOR CO TY; 1692 Crowned imperial double-headed eagle, holding sword and sceptre; crowned arms on breast within Order of the Golden Fleece; K-B flanking tail. Kremnitz (Hungary) Mint 47mm 28.55g Davenport 3262; KM 214.3
That's a very nice thaler! The mint for this coin is Kremnitz (Hungary). On the obverse to the right, in the legend, is the Madonna and child used for this mint. With the date 1692, your coin is Davenport 3262. I'm sure there's a KM number as well, but I don't own a copy of that reference for the 17'th century. Here's a link to a Wikipedia page for this coin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hungary-thaler-leopold-1692.png Here's one for sale. The the obverse looks hairlined or even tooled in the fields, based on the images. https://worldqualitycoins.com/produ...leopold-i-kremnitz-dav-3262-km-214-3-ngc-xf40 This is my only Leopold I thaler, dated 1691, Hall mint, KM# 1349, Her# 633-634, Davenport ECT# 3242. 28.41 grams
I like the color on the coin in the OP. That is a very handsome thaler! (Even if Leopold “Hogmouth” was not the most handsome man himself.) Like @Randy Abercrombie, I have a minor denomination- another 3-kreuzer piece.
Fantastic design JoJo, and coin. I found this one in a repaired slab. https://auctions.stacksbowers.com/l...nt-leopold-i-pcgs-genuine-repaired-vf-details
