I would like to kick some butt though. It sure makes me angry that someone would destroy something in that manner. That is almost a criminal act.

For the original poster - Can you tell us a little about your uncle, and his collection? Was he a well-to-do guy and this was just part of his portfolio, or was he a modest man who had an affinity for coin collecting? The picture in the first post - is that all there was (for coins), or are there still boxes of individual coins?

Sorry if I am asking personal/intrusive questions. For some of us, this type of situation is what will be left after we pass and I am just curious about the man who left it and any lessons that can be learned from it.

Last, but not least, kudos to your uncle for blessing you with this great inheritance.

With all the paperwork I would think you could contact the same coin experts that your uncle used. I'd start with that, at least by phone.

A coin need not be cut in order to ascertain the metal content. I can't understand why anyone would cut a coin in half to find that out. I'm not giving you advice but if it were me, i'd contact the PNG and/or ANA for a list of reputable dealers in my area and get some recommendations from them as to grading and cataloging of my coins. PNG is the Professional Numismatics Guild and the ANA is the American Numismatic Association (just trying to help in case you didn't know)
Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Sorry to hear about your Uncle...and good tidings to you on your inheritance. What ever you do with these Gold coins...please do NOT let them divide your family. I have seen what money can do to some of my close family members and it is not pretty. Remember it's money that your Uncle intended for your family to have and enjoy and not to fight over. I am sure you have this under control, just a friendly warning on the evils of money.

Please don't go back to the dealer who cut your coin in half just to test the gold content. He's not worth calling a coin dealer if he can't even determine the gold content of a coin without doing it in a totally non-destructive way.

I would love to have folks such as yourselves bring such a wonderful collection into my coin shop

As a dealer this is the sort of collection that I enjoy working with. I think any dealer worth his salt should be able to evaluate the coins and help you with splitting it. Sometimes siblings want the coins and sometimes they want the money. A legit numismatist should have no problem putting these in piles of equal value.
And I agree DON'T go back to the guy that cut the coin in half. A real coin dealer would never do that.
Also yes please do remain here on the forums...we're a fun lot :)
