Slowly ID'ing and posting my recent coins. Coin is actually darker, had to brighten it up a bit to show all the details. Cilicia, Tarsos 164-27 BC. AE19 / 5.65g O: Turreted bust of Tyche right R: Sandan standing on the back of a mythological beast right, holding hammer and flower, two monograms to left SNG France 1304 var
I have an unusual bronze from Tarsus that I haven't shown before. The reverse depicts a Ciliarch crown. From CNG's archives: "The crown is that of the Ciliarch or Cilicarch, the High Priest of Cilicia who presided over provincial temples dedicated to certain emperors. The different busts that decorate this crown represent the various emperors who were honored with temples throughout the region." Unfortunately it is not possible to discern the identity of the seven emperors shown on this crown: CILICIA, Tarsus. Elagabalus 218-222 CE Æ 23mm, 6.91 g, 12h Obv: laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right Rev: Ciliarch crown decorated with seven imperial portraits, ЄΛ, and KOIN monogram; A/MK in center of crown Ref: Cf. SNG France 1557 (similar type with five heads on crown); cf. SNG Levante 1079 (same); SNG Copenhagen 374 corr. (obv. legend) From the estate of Thomas Bentley Cederlind. Ex Cederlind 125 (1 July 2002), no. 96 Levante expanded the ЄΛ and KOIN monogram to ЄΛЄVΘЄPON KOINOBOVΛION (“free session of the assembly”).
All the examples posted are types I would love to own!! Congrats!!! I believe this is my only example of 'Cilicia'---Zeus and Nike from Elaiussa, circa 150-50 BC:
man, some cool coins here...that "beast" is awesome (nice black and tan patina) and that crown with heads thing is killer...never seen that one!
Wow icerain => man, that's a fantastic OP-example (congrats) Oh, and great thread-additions by the coin-gallery ... especially TIF's new Elagabalus example (sweet ... amazingly cool reverse)

thanks, my friend (I loved being back at my old childhood home ... but it's always great to be back "home" ... and seeing the hounds/kids) ... oh, and I'm still off-work for a couple of weeks *priceless*
@TIF thats a interesting looking coin, never seen anything quite like it. Welcome back @stevex6 .Always nice to have days off from work, and nice coins.
Great coin Ice! Like the desert patina! I just picked one of these up from a pick pile at a dealers table and have been unable to attribute. Thanks for posting yours! Here is mine: Cilicia, Tarsos AE17. Time of Antiochos IV, 174-164 BC. Turreted head of Tyche right, monogram to left / Sandan standing on horned, (winged?) lion right, holding ears of corn and bipennis (ancient war axe), [and maybe a wreath but have not confirmed this]; monograms to left and right. 6.13 grams 22mm Wish the obverse was better struck but the reverse fairly nice except where the counterstamp of Helios has interfered but I will not complain I like the Helios The horned lion is also pretty cool!
Very nice OP coin! My only Tarsos: Cilicia - Tarsos turret counterstamped Bow Pompey Pirates AE 19 164 BCE Tyche-Zeus seated Ex: @John Anthony
