Paid $100 for this one. Nice original VF and a better date. Auctioned it from 99 cents and it went for $180!
I'm definitely a "budget collector" but I've gotten some pretty good deals. $5 for both: $20 for both: Someone was nice enough this to me for $2 when I was getting started: $18 for both: $10:
Several months ago I was in my LCS, and I had bought a proof set and he slipped this in the bag. Sent from my A463BG using Tapatalk
Well El Cheapo, you've inspired me. I picked up a 7070 on eBay and I'm going to fill it with some nice cheap coins. Of course I have quality type coins but those are in slabs. The most fun i ever had in this hobby was assembling a complete date and mint mark set of Walking Liberty halves. They are not high grade but they all have fully readable dates and are free of deep scratches, harsh cleaning, and big rim bumps.
Glad to inspire! I just bought a second 7070 album that I'm trying to fill with problem-free XF-BU coins... slowly. Similar to you, the item I treasured the most (and miss terribly) was a problem-free, completed Dansco 7070 set in AG-VF. No rim dings, scratches, cleanings... just original coins with lots of wear that all had a similar look. I spent more time with that book than I did The Count of Monte Cristo. Plus, since I became a dealer, I've had to stop collecting just to keep treading water. I actually want something I can keep my hands on and get some enjoyment out of.
You seem to have a good eye for picking them, C-B-D! Here is another one of my 'el-cheapo' buys. Paid about 35 Euros ($39) for this 1842- O quarter. It also turned out to be a very scarce variety with eagle bearing 'open claws'. Much scarcer than the common variety with 'closed claws'.
Not necessarily cheap, but value for money wise, I think it qualifies. Was at a show looking for additions to my 20th century UNC type set and found an NGC MS65 RD Indian Cent. Asked the dealer about the cost, and with the strong smell of alcohol on his breath (at 10am) he said $150. I didn't argue. I've seen similar on ebay for $400-$500, So thanks Jack (or Jim, or Mr. Morgan) for the deal!
People have gotten away with less than that after employing a gun to get their price. That's probably a $200 coin (I'm leaning original-surfaces VF30) aside the fact that it's a vanishingly-rare transitional die. Hope you had a bottle of wine to crack which was appropriate for the situation.
CBD take a very close look at this one in hand as it maybe a rpd 005.......can't tell for sure from the image but if it is bling bling bling $$$
