I haven't really looked at the program very much but how do you put the places into it...what I mean is did you literally drag and drop each one of the markers onto the map? I might do this with my token collection. Would be interesting to see where all the bases were in relation to each other.
Yes. You select a marker (they have a bunch of types or you can upload your own), and you place it on the map. Then you add whatever content you want for its pop-up. You can search for a place on the map as you're creating it, and it will mark the place for you to pin (or maybe even put a marker there for you-- I didn't use that function). That doesn't work well with ancients since many places no longer exist and the exact locations are sometimes speculative. Creating the maps, even with all of the information I put in each popup, didn't take long. Searching Google for the location of no-longer-extant cities added considerably to the build time.
@TIF The map does look right. I was trying to say it may look better with colors. Right now its showing exactly how you posted it.
Ah. Okay, good to know. I never did go back and see how it would look using a satellite map base. I'll change the Greek map to a satellite view and see how it looks. ... Here's the Greek map rendered in satellite view. I like it. I'll also change the provincial map and see how I feel about the style over the next few days. Thanks for the suggestion!
The main factor regarding accuracy is the lack of detailed location information for extinct ancient cities. If you zoom in maximally, many/most of my markers will be far from precise. They're close enough for a general feel of location, and that's good enough for my purposes.
Having a website for almost 2 two decades, I'm aware of all the work that went into this mapping effort. I really enjoyed your site and map work. Kudos.
What a great idea for using the maps! It'll be so much better than my just keeping rough notes such as, "Exeggute -- spawns in study coin tray". Oh, TIF's idea is not bad either .
@TIF .Really looks nice now, are you going to make a map for your Byzantine coins? @zumbly .Are the trays good? I've read from a few sites saying the blue velvet can tone or scratch the coins.
Since I only have a few different Byzantine mint coins, no. I may add Roman Imperial and Republican coins to the existing Roman map, showing just one or a few coins at Rome, plus whatever other mints I have. I could used markers of another color.
Hmmm... I wouldn't know about that. I actually only use this one for temporary storage. It's a small wooden box I have in my study that I usually use to keep more recent acquisitions on hand for easy access. After awhile, they'll all go into their flips or envelopes, and then into my safe or dry cabinet.
