Got my first day off in 110 days....due to heavy rain!
Here is my AV Stater 8.58g./21mm. struck at Teos Mint/ circa 323-19BC
    obv. laureate head of Apollo
    rev. charioteer with biga

Philip took the throne of Macedonia in 359BC, under his rule, Macedon became the dominant power in Greece. By 336BC he was master of Greece. That same year he was murdered, and Alexander his son became king. Alexander III would eventually expand the Macedonian Empire to the Indian frontier.
Philip II was also famous for his horse teams, which won races at the 106th/107th/108th Olympic games....hence the biga on his coins!
In the modern games, Germany is the dominate equestrian power. 791159l.jpg

Very nice John. This is one of my targets. I feel that Philip II was the brilliant Mastermind, cut down prematurely. And his son was the brilliant Executive of the brilliant plan, again, cut down prematurely...

Agreed, Germany is the present equestrian power... But not in bigas, trigas, or even quadrigas!:)

Alexander was really lucky. I saw the movie with Colin Farrell, had Darius III only used his bowman at the Battle of Arebela, he would have decimated the Macedonian army, like the English at Agincourt vs French army.

Agreed on luck, but Alexander won ALL of his battles that he personally lead. He had the right audacity, at the right focal point, and won. Darius RAN for the battlefield both at Issus and Gaugemela (Arabella), and HE had a VAST advantage in the number of troops! However, the Makedons were disciplined, well trained, well led (both from the staff and Alexander), and held their ground enough to allow a critical advantage to be played out. Darius ran at Issus and abandoned his wife and daughters to Alexander, who treated them with dignity as Royalty. Again, Darius RAN from Gaugemela... this tells you what type of leadership this man possessed, and did not deserve his Empire...
