    Nathan401 Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

I spend alot of time here on Cointalk, looking and learning. It seems someone is always posting about this coin show, or that coin show. I have never been to a show, and I am really itching to go to one. Anyone know of any shows in my (Rhode Island) area? Thanks.

Sure, don't spend your food money, car money, rent money or your education money on coins.

Don't bring money. Just look and learn. That's what I did for my first 4 shows. Then I just bought some bullion the next few times. Not going to buy any coins until I know what I am doing, which may take awhile.

Have you found any decent coin shops in RI?

Wear comfortable shoes ( you're doing a lot of walking), take copious notes on what you view (so as to not jump the gun on purchases), walk the floor a number of times before you commit on a purchase, and lastly.........have fun. :)

Just because you're new, don't be intimidated by other buyers or sellers. They put their pants on the same as you. Ask questions about everything, if you can't get answers, move on. If you feel a little uncomfortable with a deal move on, you can always come back.
I have no idea why, but there are always other customers there who think they are above all others. I won't let them intimidate me and if a seller doesn't give the same courtesy or attention to me as he did the guy ahead or beside of me, I'm done.
The last one I went to, I came home with one coin three notes (all from one seller, super nice guy) and five books. There was one thing there that I wanted before I left the house, after waiting for 40 minutes on a guy ahead of me, to open his binder full of shopping list and ask to see everything, the seller acted like I was bothering him when I asked to see one coin. I would've bought that coin had he acted differently. My mind was made up that I wasn't going to buy it before he quoted me the price.
There are some good people in this hobby though and most will bend over backwards to help even if you are a newbie.

Woonsocket has a show a couple times a year.
There is a monthly show in New Bedford.
This Sunday Aug. 14th is a good show in Auburn, MA at the Elks club on Rte. 12.

buy books before you buy coins. learn about grading first. start out small. know how much you want to spend on coins first. take a loupe/magnifying glass with you. make and bring a list of coins you are on the hunt for.
do not leave coins in your car or hotel room. wait until the dealer is done with the customer they are waiting on before you ask them questions. if the dealer is mean go onto the the next table. always ask questions about the coin you are interested in. if he/she has multiples of the same coin always ask for a discount. they might not give it, but it usually helps to ask. have FUN.

Well, I'm from Ct (ya, I know), and about a month ago they had one about ten miles from me. I found it by google, just a search for coin shows in my area. They also were having an auction of multiple estates they also had coins- looked way out of my $ range. Ya never know.

Not yet, although there must be. I go into Massachusetts to Heritage in Bellingham. The owners have been good to me, and vice vesa.

I'm in Colorado and feel fortunate that there are several shows a month around me. I love them. I don't buy coins yet but buy bullion. I make great connections with dealers on the silver bullion where I find dealers who buy at spot and sell for a dollar over. A one dollar round trip is excellent. When I first started silver I was paying a 4 dollar round trip.

There isn't enough room in RI for a coin show.

    Both are great shows.
    Westford is up by Boston.
The Auburn coin show isn't in Worcester. It is in Auburn on rte. 12 at the Elks club.
Both shows are very well run
by Ernie. There is good security. Usually an ANACS rep, Paul Joseph is there. If you submit coins to him he will mail them for free to Colorado.
