Good morning folks! Just wanted to share a pretty cool coin that just came my way as part of a massive estate collection of shield nickels all attributed with RPD/DD varieties. It’s a lot to process, but this is one of the standouts so far. It is a missing leaf variety but there also must have been some serious grease in the die because it’s missing letters galore! Would love to hear the thoughts of those more familiar with the type as well as other varieties to look out for. The collection also had lots of 2 cent pieces, IHC over dates and other cool stuff. I’ll post more soon.
The missing leaf was a problem between 1866 and 1868. The were many working dies made with out them. There aren't exactly rare, and hard to attribute. The missing leaf is supposed to be just below the last T of trust. There is 3 leaves instead of 4.
Thanks learning more everyday, now to retain all this information I'm liking the missing letters more than the missing leaf... arrow where the 4th leaf should be.
