I was at a coin show today and picked this up from a discount bin for a few bucks: I can't seem to find any info indicating that there is 1938 D/D. Does anybody have any thoughts about what this is?
I'm not sure. Could be. But I do know that a D over D falls under the Variety category. Not the Mint Error category. They are different. https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/1655/Variety-versus-Mint-Error/
You can hope you are one of several collectors that find a new variety. It's not in Cherry Pickers, Red Book, Coin World Almanac, or others I have checked. In any event you picked up a nice coin for just a few bucks, enjoy your find. Good luck.
Thank you all for weighing in! You are totally right! In fact, he had just given me a nice 1939 D Jefferson for $1.50 (which I thought was a great deal) and I was trying to throw more business his way when I just grabbed this 1938 D from the bin. @paddyman98 - Thanks! That was a great read.
We've a lot who come on here with high-powered microscopes searching relentlessly for these varieties and errors and this is the website we typically give them, but do they bother to look at it, no way. But this is your resource for understanding these things.
