I need some honest advice. I think I bought this Shield Nickel when I was in high school and didn't know what I know now. It is definitely a details coin. I am wondering however, if it has enough residual collectable value to be worth something.

What "net" grade would you assign this to establish a value? I got no idea . . . . .

It looks cleaned. But has good details.
    AU details at best?

I think this has a classic example of a 1960's / 1970's coin that has been "whizzed". Not sure what the LCS was trying to "hide" or disguise. I thought it was whizzed as a kid when I bought it. I just rediscovered it in my collection boxes and have no doubts.

I guess what I was trying to do is set my expectations on selling it. VF - details is pretty much what I was thinking. Not sure it will be very desirable even at that.

    It is really that white?
Do you have any other photos.
Whizzed will have a look of build up next to devices. I think you should post some darker pics along with some sharp photos of the devices.
    What does the slab say?

Yeah, the color is accurate. Looking closely under magnification, it almost looks sand blasted. It has a very fine matte surface. It's hard to photograph with the setup I have.

It's in a white rubber holder, not a TPG slab (you can assume that for MOST of my stuff). If it were graded, I would show the entire slab. These self slab internal holders are nice and white. They help me get the color balance of the coins / tokens correct.

Much better than my shield 5c... So I call it a win.

@lordmarcovan , you've been party to many a "details" coin. Hoping for your opinion as well.

It certainly looks cleaned to me; high XF or low AU details, perhaps. Couldn’t say whether it was whizzed or not, based on those pics.

Sure, but that depends on your personal standards.

It has that ghost white appearance of having had a vinegar soaking.

I'll try to get better photos early next week. Whatever was done to it, was done in the early 1970's. I remember buying this from a LCS, but being hesitant due to the surface condition. I talked myself into it (age 16 or so) by thinking (hoping) it was some kind of impared matte proof.

Looks like it spent some time in a media blast cabinet.

Looks like XF details based on ANA standards, not mine.

That’s how I used to bring up dates on buffaloes. Vinegar with a little peroxide. Leave it overnight and it would bring up a date but would turn the nickel ghost white by etching the surface of the nickel.

I don't Net grade. IMO, the coin is a corroded AU. It is NOT Whizzed and has enough design remaning to grade at least XF "details." Not worth grading.
