Found this colored 'red' penny, tried to find one, but got lost. Question is " Is this a mint error? What say you?
Why would you think it is an error? Studying the minting process and how dies are made would enable you to discard the majority of those coins you look at. There are countless ways that a coin can appear different, it doesn´t automatically make it an error or variety.
Cents from that era are copper plated zinc. So just knowing that should tell you that the most likely thing that could happen here is that the plating is wearing off from circulation and exposing the zinc. I think I've heard the plating on these isn't very thick either. Watch that video on the minting process my friend, it'll help you weed these out easily.
It's a double dye .. the mint used to much red ink when they printed the coin. I'm just joking of course
