I've been stopping by the local pawn shop most days that I go up to the office. It's been a long time since I've found anything -- I got a bag of silver dimes for a bit below melt last year with the help of a coupon, and I recently found a 1973 type set in a Capital holder that had a silver Ike for a bit over the melt value of the Ike. Last week when I stopped by, they had a bag of maybe 18 Franklin halves for $240. Today when I stopped in, I saw these: (I think the holed coin had the price tag facing down, because I was surprised when they turned it over and I saw the price. It's an 1894-S, wouldn't have had a numismatic premium even if it weren't holed, but not a bad deal at $5.) The other bag held 10 halves. I scooted them around, checked the obverse and reverse of each, and grudgingly allowed as how I'd take both bags. Here are the ones from the left bag: Oh, and at checkout the salesperson said "do you have a coupon?" I'd gotten a $20 offer, but it expired Dec 30. She ran it through anyhow, and it was accepted -- so my total for all 11 coins was $85. (No tax on coins here, although the holed coin was initially marked as a "charm", which is taxable. They fixed that.) Not sure what's going on from 4-5 o'clock on the 1914 reverse -- I'm wondering if it was maybe struck through grease; the lettering is quite weak, but it doesn't look like it was damaged. But I'm quite sure that I don't care what's wrong with it at this price.
Good score! Current melt is $8.21 for Half Dollar…you got all 11 for $7.72 each, a savings ( or instant profit ) of 49 cents a piece. Lumped all together that’s a bargain of $5.39……….which you can now apply to another coin. Just sayin’… …Spark Edited to add: A quick check at NumisMedia/FMV shows the 1913-S to list at $43.00 in VG-8…it looks to be close to that. Some of those will only be melt value, but you have snagged a mighty fine prize, my friend…Spark
Here is a 14P that has the same weakness at 4-5 oclock. It could get a details/cleaned grade but not bad for under melt. https://coins.ha.com/itm/barber-hal...-23340.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515
Oh, interesting! I'll see if I can get a decent image of this one. There's more weakness in the letters than in the rim, or at least that's the way it looks to me.
I can't not look at Barber halves. Still don't like the design, but they make for fun hunting! Same thing with Barber dimes.
