Hello! This is my first post on here, and it's in regard to a bit of a mystery I've been trying to solve. I won this coin in the recent CNG auction (Electronic Auction 553) and it was labelled as being from the Wayne Scheible collection of coins, but it came with an Italian collection tag. I was wondering if anyone here recognizes the style/handwriting of the tag and could point me in the right direction for researching provenance. Thank you! (P.S. Here are photos of the actual coin!)
You can ask CNG if they know anything about the tag. They have a great team of researchers. You might get lucky.
Interesting tag. I've never seen it. (I'd remember the octagonal shape!) Adding it to my tags file under unidentified, so I'll let you know if I see another one. Please add a comment if you learn the identity.
Wayne Scheible unfortunately passed away in September 2023. I think it is no longer possible to provide information about his purchases here. The only contact person is now CNG, they may have documents from where Wayne Scheible bought the coin. Even if the chance of success is very small. Auction houses often only have information about the previous owner; only in the case of very famous provenances are the coin's previous locations recorded. I buy a lot and often from Italy, but I have never seen a collector's card like this on a single coin. It appears that it comes from a private collector. But it will be difficult to find anything here. However, maybe a tip, write in the Italian forum. They are very active collectors there and maybe someone has already seen these collector cards there.
